Now that so many people seem to have fallen for the rumored 36mp D800, who still hopes it will have less than 20 mp ?
I know there are a few D800 posts already, but the purpose here is to see if soon before the 7th February, people changed their mind or not. I remember many people (the majority) was disapointed the first time the 36mp rumors came out.
Did you plan the workflow change to adapt for 36mp ? Will you be disapointed with a 36mp D800 ?
I am not bothered by mega whotnots
I know the D4 will produce a better IQ than my D700
The question is, what will the overall IQ of the D800 be compared to a D4
Do I buy a D4 or a D800
files size is not an issue, big hard drives are no longer an expensive item
If you want to stay ahead, or even just keep up with, the game
Cameras, software and Computers need upgrading about every 3 years
just wish I could upgrade the old brain box
@zlik: When we get our hands on production examples of these cameras, we'll be able to answer the currently imponderable (that's a big word for this time of the morning here), questions you ask... Really wish I had an answer for your last one...
@sevencrossing: Yes, gear does need upgrading once every few years. At work, we do an orientation day for everyone who needs to book anything out that I take part in every semester and instruct the students how to use it all but no matter what we say/do/show it doesn't stop them from doing dumb things with it. Our estimate is to replace each item in our our 'borrow' stock every 12-18 months, just wish for us, that 3 years was realistic. We'd be able to buy more of the better items as our budget would go further... I'd never treat my personal stuff that way. Oh well... I think there is this point under which gear stands up pretty well but then if you just abuse it that little bit more, it goes downhill really fast.
I would prefer 20mpx flat (36mpx is nice but is too much) and canon's overhyped 18mpx sensor often has very disappointing results...
I'm more concerned about cost. Really want it to be priced at $3600-$3700 (Im sure it will be $4000 tho)
If possible, Nikon should put the D4 sensor and its associated technology into a D800 variant. I see no reason there could not be three cameras built on the D800 frame: one with the 36mp sensor with AA filter, one with the 36mp sensor without AA filter and one with the 18mp sensor from the D4. Perhaps, once D4 sales fall off Nikon will put its sensor and technology into a D800 body as a way to stimulate more sales. Maybe in 2013?
@donaldejose yes, it's <i> possible </i>, they did it with the D3 -> D700. But then I think they realized that the D700 cannibalized a little too much the D3 sales and that's why, I think, they didn't do something similar with the D3s (-> D700s). I hope they decide to do it again with the D4 sensor in a D800s or something, but I doubt it. D700 users will probably see an upgrade only in the D4, and D3x users will "upgrade" to the D800. Nikon seems to have changed its strategy. Well, it actually makes sense that a studio and fashion camera doesn't need to be heavy and weather sealed. We will see what happens in the next two years.
As an amatuer looking to get into full frame and use some of my older lenses a little bit more, i would prefer a lower MP full frame, like an 18-20. I guess my only wish is that Nikon had a more amatuer full frame out there. Not everyone that wants to get into full frame is a pro, and can afford pro-line cameras if they dont want a massive amount of MP.
Im sure im in the minority on this one, but i just have older lenses that my current DX camera just doesnt fully take advantage of.
I kinda would. But then again I'm not in the market for one so I have no say.
I'm also disappointed that the D700 replacement is going to have probably 36 mp. I'm not sure why they couldn't put the D3s sensor into it and call it a day. Also put video and crap in it.

You're just being silly. The camera for you already exists and can be had for around or under $2000. You say you definitely aren't a pro, so why on earth would you need 20MP?

Well, i can give you a profession that isn't a pro but may need a high MP count> "Artists" and I'm talking about the type who hang large works in galleries not the type of artist who posts on the web. I agree with Mirtos and wish there were more Full frame camera options on the lower end spectrum. As an artist I dont want to see the pixelated form of an image when its been blown up and printed.
@ zlik- Id be happy with 18MPish as I know nikon is going to also throw in 3 years of techo goodies that the D700 might be missing... EXPEED 3 for example
I think 36 mp make no sense, at least for my style of shooting so I am leaning toward the D4.
I just cannot see how they could match the D700 ISO. For me, D7000 like noise is a no-go.
If I do upgrade it is to win and not to trade an asset (high MP) for a liability (low ISO).
At least with a D4, I would win on both fronts, the only thing I don't care much about it is it's size. I have considered walking the D3s path but I would only be trading-in higher ISO and I am not sure how obsolete its video capabilities are.
I may still just end up keeping my D700. The upgrade options are not as clear-cut and abvious as I was hoping for.

Well, exactly how big are you talking about? What gear are you using right now thats limiting you? And are you really certain that existing FF tech wont fulfill your needs already? Considered that glass is going to make a bigger impact than resolving power of the sensor?

There are many FF tech that will fulfill mirtos and my needs, but he and I are just bringing up the issue about the prices of a FF body. His point is not that silly imo
The F3 launched a "family" using the same body: F3, F3x and F3s.
Perhaps the D800 will also launch a family using the same body: 36mp with AA, 36mp without AA and either the 16mp D4 senor or the 12mp D3s sensor. Maybe everyone will get what they want. We just don't know so it is far to early for all the complaining as to what Nikon should have done with the first D800 body to be launched (which it hasn't even been yet!).
I have watched too many videos with multiple Nikon reps stating clearly that the D4 body is the "Photo journalist" performance body that can shoot in any condition. They always continued by saying that performance was desired in a "pro body" over resolution.
I have seen multiple videos where I keep picking up on those lines that seem very rehearsed. It seems the implied distinction is that those who need/want higher resolution, the robustness of the D700 style body is enough for them. It makes logical since.
Not to say I would love a cheap FF option, but this continual (going on 3 years now) gripes of this idea and complaining about the inevitable, is becoming quite over-worn.
