Nikon Refurbished equipment are excellent. You should not have any issue using them.

I have purchased 4 refurbished Nikon products. All have been flawless, all have worked like new and I haven't had a single problem. My D5000 and my 105 F2.8 VR that I currently use were both refurbished and I couldn't even tell they were not new. The cords and things were in plastic like new.
I would just make sure it is refurbished by Nikon, which I believe most are. Depending on the item there can be some pretty good deals with them.

I 100% agree that all have been as-new and they worked perfectly.
Unfortunately, they come with a shorter warranty, but by the time the first week has past, I had already used them for about 500-1000 shutter clicks and that usually is more than enough to show if something is a dud...

I have purchased three Nikon refurbished products and have had no problem with any of them. I do believe they are "as good as new."

I bought a refurb D90 a few years back, and it has lasted me a long time, and is still in excellent working condition. I would say that it was effectively as good as new (except with a shorter warranty, which didn't matter for me anyway since I wouldn't be covered by the warranty).

My D90 was refurb and still after 300,000 shots (since Ive owned it) it still shoots today.
My Sb700 and one of my 18-70mm (I always forget I have these) was refurb too.
Refurbished really means brand new with a shorter warranty and an ugly box...

My D5000 was refurbished and that is still running fine. My 55-300 was refurbished too... however, when it arrived it had no autofocus or VR. Warranty repair got it back to me pretty fast, but that did happen. Pretty much all my other equipment except my D7000, SB-700, and three lenses have been purchased used, and all continue to work fine.

Just make sure it is NIKON refurbished. There are 3rd party companies who make claims they "refurbish" items but rarely is it more than a "wipe off the dust & re-box it."
Nikon refurbished usually have a 1-year warranty.
That said add another one to having great luck with Nikon refurbished products.

But then, I don't live in NYC, so don't get to go into B&H or Adorama or whoever it is stores and look/see...

Too Bad you don't live in LA either because I buy all of my refurb and new stuff at Samys...

I bought a new Nikkor 10-24mm 3.5-4.5 today, full price. Just opened the box and it was missing the soft case and had a clear end cap on the lens, instead of the black Nikkor end cap. My guess it's refurbished, does this sound like one by you that have bought refurbished lens before? No where on the box or sales slip did it say Refurbished.
Just trying to gain as much knowledge on this before I go back to see them tomorrow. Thanks!

That sounds awful (and illegal) Bland. As far as I was aware all reconditioned stock came in plain White boxes? Definitely take it back and get an explanation. Good luck, let us know how you get on.

@bland ... I'd be on the phone to whoever you got it from ASAP.

I'm pretty hot over this and I have called them. They said come in tomorrow and we'll talk about it. I've posted this several places and the photog for the NBA Oklahoma City Thunder said if they won't give me a new one to tell them I'll be calling Nikon about this. He said what I got was either used or a returned item.
Just to add, I bought this from the #1 camera store in Tulsa. Pretty sad when you pay the extra money to buy from a quality store and they stiff you like this.

If necessary, just tell the shop that you've posted your experience on the web and will name them if they don't play ball. Nobody likes bad publicity. Don't let them just give you the pouch and lens cap, you want a new sealed lens!

Will do, SkintBrit.

Sounds used to me. I am trying to think of why mine had this at one point. It came with the clear end cap. It was either used or refurbished. If they argue I would ask for a total refund and take your money somewhere else.

I agree with tcole, I wouldn't spend my money with a store that would pawn off a used, or reburbished lens as new. Especially, when you said you paid full price. Not acceptable at all. I'd get my money back and shop elsewhere......

I'll update you all tomorrow, hopefully they'll be willing to do what's right, if not.... :-)

Bland how did you pay for it...cc or via paypal? If you paid with CC call your credit card company and dispute the charge. Also, I think I have seen some video's that did show that some Nikon len;s have shipped with the clear end-cap lens versus the stander all black. Lastly, call Nikon USA and talk to customer service and give them the serial number and see if it has ever been registered or at least get some history on the lens.
Cheers....
