I have seen this lens advertised and wondered what it all means and whether it would be useful to have for my D5000?
Analogue + digital is a bit of a puzzle for me an enthusiastic amateur.

There is no puzzle. All lenses are analogue. Cameras are either digital or analogue (film).

This lens has had not so great reviews and I don't know anyone that recommends this lens. I think the 18-105 is a much better lens or even the newer 24-120 F4 (which I think is much improved over the F3.5-5.6). I would stay away from this one and spend your money on something else.

Owned two of them - pass on it. It just never has impressed me and on DX it was never wide enough. Go with the 18-105 or 18-200.

Thank you, your advice is invaluable. I didn't see this yesterday as my computer has been playing up a bit.
