I have the D and often get a fantastic 18 point star with it's 9 blade diaphragm.

Love it, and won't exchange it for the new AFs one.

Having said that, my D is prone to purple fringe under known causes.

The purple CAs - the only bad thing it does. In B&W somehow they add to the image though - not sure how, but they do.

I doubt the G will be much better, it doesn't have any ED glass. Frankly none of the fast primes, even the new G ones are great when it comes to CA. It seems like fast prime wide open = CA.

I was impressed on how close 50/1.8G managed to get to my 50/1.4G. I'm thinking of going with the 85/1.8G and selling my 50. However 7 blades instead of 9 was quite disappointing.

I will get it as soon as it is available and get rid of the 50mm 1.8G. I loved the 85mm 1.8 D except for the rotating focus ring during AF (I was afraid it will break the camera if I accidentally touch it while focusing)

For me, 24mm and 85mm are the sexiest things on earth besides the superteles beyond 300mm. 50mm is kind of ultra-boring.

I'm personally quite happy with 50 on dx

+1. I do love the 85 1.8D, though, so I'll have to check out this new lens at some point.

From the bubble sample picture on the Nikon site, the bokeh doesn't look very much improved from the 85mm 1.8D. There's still quite a bit of halos

Currently DX, but I´m probably going to buy my friend´s D700 when he gets his D4.
At the moment I can borrow his D700 whenever I feel I need FX.

@TaoTeJared - I deleted Your image post, as it was too big. as for now there's no way to scale the image in the code, You might try to include a smaller image, please max width: 800px

@godless - 50mm on dx sucks, it's much different on fx. try 35mm on dx to see the difference

50mm sucks on FX too. And so does 35mm on DX. Just uninspiring FOV for me.
24mm is nice on both formats as is 85mm. I don´t need anything in between.
And my next step after 85mm will be AF-S 500mm f/4.

My what interesting conversation here. My experience has suggested that when I do not like something, maybe I need to just stick it on the body for a few days and shoot everything with it. I will do this with a lens sometimes.... 10.5mm fisheye is really interesting
, and the 135mm on DX will force one to look at things differently. Most of my cameras have way more capability than I do, so it is always a learning curve. And, if I can get one of the new D4's sometime in the next several months, I will have the 85mm f/1.8G on it as I really do like the slight telephoto for people, my primary subjects. My old F bodies from the 60's were used with 24, 35, 85, and 300 without problems. We are so absolutely spoiled today by the wide range of spectacular optics maybe everyone should have to choose three lenses to live with for a year and just give it a try. Millions of great photos have been taken with 50mm perspective.

For indoor shooting and street photography (specially in low light), both my 35mm 1.8 and 50 1.4G have served me well each time I have used them.

How does the 50 1.4G "suck" on FX exactly? Moreover, the 35 1.8 DX on a DX body like the D7000? Are you comparing them to the 85 1.4? If so, in what fashion?

I was referring to the field of view, not specific pieces of equipment. The field of view they produce on aforementioned formats is uninspiring. I need wider or tighter but not that. It is also a matter of preference - I really like the deeper depth of field of the wider lenses. And the distortion-free image of the longer lenses.

    ----
Sure, there are some issues with the 50mm G lenses as well.

Both the new 50mm lenses (1.8G and 1.4G) suck at large apertures compared to 24mm 1.4G - the 24mm is extremely sharp at max. aperture. Both 50mm´s need to be stopped down to around 2.8 to get the same amount of sharpness (visually examined from photos, not scientifically measured).

The bokeh circles produced by the 50mm lenses at large apertures are disc shaped on the image borders, which is annoying as well. If I want perfect or at least half-decent circles all the way, I have to stop down to f/2.8 or so - which, combined with the aforementioned "softness" issue defeats the purpose of a f/1.x lens..

And there is too much distortion on both 50mms for my liking. Such a simple lens formula and too much distortion.

    ---

Maybe I am spoiled by the AF-S 24mm 1.4G and the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM.

If and when the AF-S 50mm f/1.2 comes out I might check if that one is better. For now, neither of the currently available 50mm lenses is for me.

Of course the 24mm F1.4 will have greater apparent sharpness wide open, it is a wide angle lens, which means it has more depth of field than either of the 50mm lenses wide open. My 50mm F1.8G is very sharp wide open, sure its not 24mm F1.4 sharp, but then it costs $1700 less...

    +1 for PB PM

@Godless -- you are absolutely right...you are "spoiled." He He. It is not even fair to compair the 24 1.4 to the 50 1.4G or even the 35 1.8.

For the money if you find a good copy I personally like the sigma 85mm 1.4. Image quality, having the same filter size as the rest of my lenses, general feel. I have liked the sigma primes I have shot with. The nikon 1.8 is nice though. Thats a tough decision.

Aetas, the Sigma I heard is actually pretty good, although it's a good $400 more expensive than the 85mm 1.8.

Hmm, the 85mm 1.8 has a 67mm thread, the same thread as my 18-135mm. Tempting, but no dice, still a tad more expensive than I want it to be. But then again, at least it's not 85mm 1.4 expensive.

OK, OK, now about those who have ordered one of these Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 things.... does anyone know the delivery date or release date? Is it coming with the D4? I have one coming from B & H and they just do not tell anyone anything until they have it in hand. So, if there are secrets about the WHEN, let me hear it. Thank you.

That's a good question. I'm still waiting to get our copy of the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm ƒ/1.8G for review. I've held-off my 85mm Nikon F-Mount review so I could add this lens to the bunch. The original review was 6 f-mount 85mm lenses, but now it will be 7 with the new 85mm ƒ/1.8G. I'm glad I did, because you'll be able to see how the new lens performs as compared to the other 85mm lenses out there.

From the above, it appears the new lens is sharper wide open than the 1.4 is at f/5.6.... amazing!!! Best $500 I have spent I think!
AND... shipping in a few days!
