Anyone getting it?
I probably won't, I'm looking forward to wide end primes. The 105mm VR that I have could do as a portrait lens if I wanted to.
For $500, I'm not sure what I'd get. I'd probably be happy with a 50mm 1.8.

I'm probably going to get it. After I get the Sigma 70-200mm, the next lens on my list was the sigma 85mm f1.4 But now with the nikkor 85mm f1.8 thrown in the mix, I just might have to pick that one up instead. I'm surprised how cheap it is, and have no doubt the PQ will be top notch.
I really thought i would get it but it seems kind of expensive. I wad hoping it would be in the $300 range instead. I know it is cheap compared to the f1.4 version. I don't shoot enough portraits to justify it right now and i also have the 105 that does a great job. My next lens will be a supertelephoto...i missed some shots at christmas on our trip because i didnt have enough reach.
I am thinking about getting it.
I wanted to get the AF-D 1.8 for some time (would be my first AF lens), but now I think I'll wait for the first reports about the new AF-S. From what I heard the AF-D is already very good and the only advantage I can see so far would be the weather sealing. It is a bit lighter as well but bigger.
Downside is that the recommended price here in Germany is 520 Euro (app. 660 $US) and the AF-D currently sells for app. 390 Euro.

You were expecting the AF-S model to be cheaper than the AF-D model... you live in some kind of dream world don't you?
I'd strongly consider getting this lens, if Nikon also releases a new 24mm F2.8G this year. I would then dump the beastly 24-70mm F2.8 and switch to primes.

I hadn't ever looked at the price of the AF-D since I couldn't use it. I just thought it would be more in line with the other G lenses that have been released. It isn't too bad of a price, but a little more than I want to spend on a lens I am not sure I would use that much yet.
I was planning on getting this lens until I saw it had 7 diaphragm blades compared to the 9 the af-d one has. I was just going to pre order, but I think I'm going to wait to get my hands on one and test it out myself before I put the money out for it.

I don't think it would be weather sealed. I would however expect the build to be similar to the recent G primes in that there is a rear gasket and that's about it.
However, build should be slightly heavier in that it is more expensive than most G primes.
I also thought it was more expensive than I expected, but it's a good excuse for me not to get it. :D
Considering that the new model is 350g, down 30g from the old AF-D model (I think this is the first FX AF-S lens that weighs less than the AF-D model!), I suspect build quality will be on par with the 50mm F1.8G.
Had the 85mm D. With DX crop it's perfect for portraits and I loved it for that. A bit awkward otherwise (IMO). Sold it and not sure if I want the G right now.
That is likely referring the dust and moisture gasket on the rear end.
@ tcole1983 and NSXType-R -- I agree with you both. My 105 Micro 2.8 VR does an amazing job, be it for portraits and/or macro...and more flexible. Hence, it has VR and can utilize teleconverters. Thus, I will pass on this lens.

With all do respect, I would never use the word "dump" when it come to my 24-70mm 2.8.

I still use my trusty 28-70mm f2.8... Now that is a beast!
All I can say is Meh! on this lens. I want my 10mm f/4 or 28-200mm f2.8 (or the 85mm f/1.4 they already have)
I'm not sure on this one. I love my 85mm 1.8D (the 105vr is great too) and I think the $5-600 is a great price for it but I was starting to look at the 85 1.4D or the Sigma 85. I have the AF drive so the AFS doesn't add much. It's all about the look and feel of the image it produces for me. If I can get $300 for my D then it would be a worthwhile upgrade.
On the flip side I saw the Fuji X-pro1 and the primes with it and I'm starting to re-think some of my set-up. Go primes there and keep zooms/macro for my Nikon.
I have a feeling this is going to be a perplexing and possibly really expensive year for me.

Or the word "Beastly"!

I don't know about everyone else, but for me, being able to take instant manual control over the focusing makes AFS lenses worth the additional premium. Do the Sigma's allow that? Their 85mm 1.4 is meant to be a good lens.

+1 for the manual over-ride of AF-S. Its a must for portraits on the fly when using a shallow depth of field.
I'll wait to see a comparison in image quality between that and the 1.8D... if it's close I'll lean towards the earlier model due to its smaller dimensions. Smaller lenses = more lenses that come along for hikes. Love my 20mm/f2.8D.
Although I've been a bit on both sides of the fence with the 85/1.8 lenses, I've pretty much decided to save the money from buying one of them and putting it towards the 85/1.4. I'll be paying a lot for that extra 2/3 of a stop, but knowing myself, it will only be a few years before I'll end up getting the 1.4 anyway.
I'm hoping that the AF-S version will cause the used price AF-D version to drop a bit, its currently *just* beyond my price range :)

The Sigma 85mm does allow for override focusing & it is a hell of a lens. There are a lot of pros in my area that are using them and the images are fantastic. The local shop has gone through over 100 and none have shown the usual Sigma issues. For $1000 it is really good. If the 1.8G is just as good, 500 bucks less is a hell of a deal.

Good luck in whatever you decide, as you say, 2012 looks like being a very expensive year!
