DxOMark reports the D4 as the second highest rated sensor they have tested at 89. What beats it with a score of 91? The medium format $40,000 plus Phase one camera with the 80 megapixel Phase One IQ180 back. Impressive but I think the D800 will score even higher than the D4 and the Phase One IQ 180.

I just received my D4 yesterday and am so pleased. The new ergonomics make it "just feel good in the hand." I really want to thank Peter for the outstanding NR site. It has been invaluable to me for keeping informed during the entire process of getting a D4. Not to mention all of the benefit I've received from NR with photography in general.

I feel like an idiot... my order shipped from amazon the other day however for some strange reason it didnt ship with 2 day shipping (im a prime member).

I thought they screwed up my order however I looked at my original invoice and it had standard shipping selected... maybe I had a brain fart?

Either way, it will be here on monday 3/26.

Gave me some time to order my RRS L bracket though so its all gravy.

    @ Tsy
You had originally ordered correctly. When I first placed my pre-order
with Amazon U. S. the only option available was for standard shipping. I called and asked why this was and they said standard shipping was the only option at this time and I could check back later. Later on I was able to change the shipping to overnight. You have a great attitude for the wait and before you know it you will be enjoying your new D4.

OK, I have my D4, and the XQD card and reader were in the box. So, I will have another coming soon for a second set.

The camera is rather nice. It is big, heavy, yet when shooting I noticed neither the weight nor size as a deficit. It just felt good. Reminded me of many years ago when I was shooting the Hasselblads with the 250mm, hand held.

I am learning how to handle the file size.... see "D4 Workflow" thread.

Am I pleased.... I shot one this morning in the dark, literally, I could not see enough to read even large print, and the ISO 12,800 at 1/4 sec with VR, OMG what a camera! Beautiful shot.

This should be good on the end of a long lens... to be determined soon!

Glad to hear you are enjoying your new D4 - that makes two of us. I'm using the Nikon 24-70 on mine......I'm curious as to what lens you are using on it. I also have a 70-200vrII, but have not used it with the D4 yet. I'm just getting to know the camera a little bit first.

Hi Nikoneer.... I first put the 16-35mm f/4.0VR on it. Next is the 85mm f/1.8G, then the 24-120 f/4 VR, and then the 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II, and finally the 400mm f/2.8 along with 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverters. Eventually, the 10.5mm f/ 2.8 w/ modified hood (it is a DX lens but will cover like a TV in the 1950's with a flat top and bottom, round sides), and some other stuff, 20mm, f/2.8, 50mm f/ 1.4, 135mm f/ 2.0. And some others.... I cannot remember.....

I do this systematically so I learn what the heck's going on. Actually take the camera and single lens out and just shoot with that for a few hours and when I get home..... viscously edit. About one of five or ten get to final edit. And do I make mistakes.... found I bumped the shutter speed dial, for verticals when shooting horizontals, so have found how to make certain the second release is locked if I am not using it... like I need to pay attention.

This is most likely the finest camera I have ever owned, although the 500C Hasselblads in the late 60's early 70's were phenomenal.

I am excited and I am certain you are as well. This is actually my first FX digital... so I have a lot to learn. We will see if I can....

    Greetings msmoto:

Like you this is the finest camera I have ever owned and the D4 is also my first FX digital. As for learning our new camera..... Well that will come with time as we both discover as we go. Sounds like it will be a work in progress for both of us.

I've been thinking of the 24-120 f4, but was not sure if it would live up to the potential of the D4. I'd really like to know your opinion of it.

I have enjoyed reading every post you have made on the forum because they are always informative and fun at the same time.

I took my d4 out today on a job and got to take a few of my own shots and I have to say this camera puts out the most incredible images. They just have this really great look, I thought it was the new sharp screen on the back with tons of contrast that was fooling me. Once I got home and saw them on the monitor it was unbelievable.

Here is one of the first few shots I on this camera, I even tried to take a bad shot of this bike by a pool with the sun shooting right in the lens and the photo turned out really nice.

Gosh, thank you very much... I suppose my comments come from being old... and having been dragged around the block a few times.... chuckle....

I have not put the 24-120 on the D4, but I guess today is the day. I have found the lens does well on the D90, so I suspect it should also be good on the D4. I may do some more like on PAD today, with the VR the pan shots are almost automatic. A note here, I really do not check on edge sharpness with my lenses. Almost everything I shoot is about what is composed in the 1/3, 1/3 area as the primary point of interest, and the edge is less important. Maybe the one exception would be an architectural shot where I want the building edge sharp as it goes off frame. The primary choice of the 24-120 over the 24-70 was the VR. It is also less expensive although this is not really an issue in the choice. The VR is worth, to me, a lot more than one f/stop.

Watch PAD in the next few days and no doubt a 24-120 shot will show up. And thanks for you comment.

Help! Other than needing to wipe the drool off of my D4 every 10 minutes...I am having two "real" problems. Can anyone help?

Problem #1: When i select the 1080p 60fps movie mode; the movie still plays back "real time" at 24fps....is there post work required to get slow motion?

Problem #2: I have input the date for my manual zeiss lenses "non cpu lens data" ...however the metering does not work. If I have the lens wide open (F2) and the camera in aperture priority mode....it exposes every shot correctly. If I stop down the lens to 22 then it is basically a "white out"....5 or 10 stops over....really weird. The aperture setting shows up properly on the display based on where it is adjusted on the lens....but have a missed a meter setting?

Please! Help me enjoy the greatest camera i have ever owned by leading me to these solutions! Thank you so much!

OK, I have no answers, but did want to say that I use the strap religiously so as to avoid dropping the camera because of the drool. I wonder if they all do it. A bit more on the serious side.... I would search NIKON tech support and see if the Zeiss problem existed on the D3s as well. And, having attempted reading the manual, I can say that if one actually goes through the pages reading one at a time with camera in hand, some of the "problems" suddenly have solutions. Somehow NIKON like all manufacturers has the little secrets well hidden in the manuals, and it may be only one sentence which explains this.

I am doing some video after a full lens trial with all the lenses I currently have. Really great camera though is it not?

    Thought on the new D4:

I have enjoyed using the D3s more than I can share. One feature I really like is having two CF card slots. This enabled me to shoot jpeg on one card and RAW on another. This was also a "safety" feature for me so if I had an issue on a transfer or a bad CF card, I always had another card to get the pics from.

The new D4 does not have this feature with two CF card slots, just one CF slot and one XQD slot.

    Any thoughts about this?

I have used the two slots the same way. An XQD as primary, CF as back-up, using a Lexar Pro 600x, 16 GB CF, UDMA.

I now do the XQD as primary and the CF as overflow. This is because I am checking he images fairly often, editing in camera as I shoot. Thus, I offer the experience of a first time D4 owner, i.e., never had a D3s.

I think I need to be slapped ....

I was talking with my wife about my desire to upgrade my D90.

I talked about a D700 or a D3S (used) but commented on the loss of lens length (you know what I mean) and how the D800 would give me the room to crop and still have the same or more MP left over. She said well that sounds good. Then I told her about the 4FPS and how I would like more and the D4 has more, however is $6,000.00

She looked at me with one of those well what are you waiting for then said, if that suits your needs better order one. I jumped inside then told her I cannot justify $6k for my hobby even if it makes me a couple thousand a year from the side jobs I do.

Have you solved these problems? What is your NLE?

On #2, in A mode, you should be able to adjust with -/+ exposure compensation.

    My best,

    Mike

We know more about these things.... go order your D4.... you will have a couple months to save up the money... the camera is so good you will love it. But, maybe you need to tell her first, you will also need to order about five or ten thousand in lenses for the FX format.....

    And thank your wife....

For those who haven't pre-ordered a D4, what is the conventional thinking on when stock will become more readily available? At only 5,000 units being produced per month, could this be expected to take as long as six months? Longer?

What a great question. I wonder if there is any data which would indicate the number of pre-orders for the D4. Or, how many D3s bodies were sold in the six months of production. For sure the ADMIN would have the data, or know the source as this is not really a secret. Then we can guess the wait at a the 5,000 per month rate of production. How about it guys?

msmote, I am looking at the D800 full rez picture. I would like to have a few sample to compare them against the D4, something that would involve bokeyed uneven bright sky or background similar to this one:

You think it would be possible for you to post them for us in your flickr?

Well, there is this one which I think is a full frame. It is 4928 x 3280, which is 16.16MP. I believe it is an 8 or 9 MB JPEG file.

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/fantinesfotos/7014984231/sizes/o/in/photostream/

I will try, however to grab a shot this evening with my 135mm f/2.0 on the D4 and then download the file maybe tomorrow??? I am shooting JPEG, Fine as I do not have my Lightroom 4 yet and LR 3 does not accept the RAW files from the D4.

Your shot is absolutely incredible. I will go find something with small detail so we can have some comparison.

And for the rest of the story. Some bokah... but no sky. The first shot above has plain color in it...

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/fantinesfotos/7025023587/sizes/o/in/photostream/ This is 4860 x 3235

    and

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/fantinesfotos/6878912992/sizes/o/in/photostream/ This is 4928 x 3240

Take a look and see what you think. I wonder what these would look like in RAW.... Maybe better? These are both JPEG Fine

Give me some feed back. I spent an hour out near the tracks waiting for the train, only to have it come by about 30 minutes after I returned home. I love it!

OK, just added this last one. If you look carefully, you will see where I used the auto-mask in Lightroom to bring the sky down, and I was a bit sloppy. But for the purpose of resolution and the "sky bokah" this should work, but the sky is horrible looking after I darkened it.

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/fantinesfotos/6879005314/sizes/o/in/photostream/

My conclusion, comparing the Dogwood blossom and the head of your bird.... the detail is so great in the head I would say there is more there. But the little stamen in the blossom are very sharp as well. Let me know what you think..
