To those that have the chance to receive their D4 soon, I am looking for the D4 USB productID/PID. To retrieve it please follow the procedure below.

    Cheers.

    Under MacOS X:
    1) Turn the camera on.
    2) Connect the camera to the Mac with a USB cable.
    3) In the Apple menu select 'About this Mac' and click on the 'More Info...' button.
    4) In the System Profiler window select USB.
    5) You should now see the Nikon device information.

Nikon has vendorID equal to 0x04b0, and you should have the Nikon productID in the 0x04xx format. This is the unique identifier I need.

    Under WinXP:
    1) Turn the camera on.
    2) Connect the camera to the PC with a USB cable and allow it to recognize the new device.
    3) Cancel out of the Found New Hardware Wizard if it starts.
    4) Look in HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB or open the Device Manager from the Control Panel and find your device on the list, usually under 'Other Devices'. It may show a yellow exclamation mark indicating it is an unknown device. In Windows 7, go to Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Device Manager. The D4 should show up under "Portable Devices". Expand "Portable Devices", right click the D4 item and select properties. Go to the "Details" tab and select the "Hardware Ids" property.

Double-click the device to open the properties. Select the Details tab and ensure that 'Device Instance Id' shows in the attribute dropdown box.
A string of characters will be displayed (looking like this USB\VID_04A9&PID_3145&REV_0002). The four characters to the right of 'VID_' and 'PID_' are the vendor ID and product ID, respectively.

Nikon has vendorID equal to 0x04b0, and you should have the Nikon productID in the 0x04xx format. This is the unique identifier I need.

eclipseone: why do you need a unique identifier for the D4? If you bought one you have the identifier. If you did not, why should anyone give you theirs?

The guy is probably a programmer and does not need the serial number of your camera but rather the code that identifies it as a D4 as opposed to a D7000 or else, most likely to be able to show the correct picture or establish a proper communication.

    Nothing to be effraid of.

Thanks Eclipseone, this is good information to know.

It also gives the revision number of the firmware, unfortunately I have a D90 and its PID is 0421

Exactly. And I will need the same for the D800/D800E once it's out.

You can see there why I need this information:

Couldn't you ask Nikon? There must be some sort of SDK or interface spec available. I guess you have tried without success.

Nikon doesn't answer although they could easily. And their SDK is usually released a couple of months (3 to 6 and sometimes more or never) after the camera is available. The D4 and D800/D800E will certainly have a SDK during the summer which is a bit late for such basic information.

I guess some of us are either too old, too dumb, or just too lazy to be able to comprehend what this is about. But I can tell you about what life was like before television, ha, ha, ha.

But, will a 400mm and 2x teleconverter be good for solar eclipse events?

And today is the day B & H is supposed to be shipping a D4 to me. I will post again later in the day and let you know what happens....

    Yes

but beware of burning out your sensor

    or more importantly your retina

lots and lots of information on the web

some of the x10 ND filters are primary designed for solar observation

but use with caution you but a new sensor but not a new retina

It sure will and if you do live in Greensboro, then on 2017 August 21st you're among the lucky ones who will have a total solar eclipse nearly at your doorstep, about 200 miles south. Make sure you're in the path not to far from the centerline.

enigmeow, did they get any D800 bodies in?

Then mine should be here by tomorrow in time for this weekend Event.
I am hoping the D800 shows up too so I can make a "Hands On" choice.

Remarkable that B&H would not have a single camera yet 3 small Nikon camera shops in the midwest already have them..

Makes you wonder who is telling the truth...

Of course, look at the D4's already on ebay being sold by dealers

Well, yes, I suppose.... however on eBay, the photo on one site was not a D4. And starting at below $1000 then a buy it now of $7000... mmm... And of course these eBay folks may be selling something they do not actually have. And the shipping will be within 24 hours of a "cleared payment" which will not "clear" until Monday the 19th. So, it would appear the shipping would be on the 20th at best.... just like all the rest.

The small dealers.... cannot explain that. I suppose the only salvation is from B & H there is no tax nor shipping which in a state with a dealer and 8% tax would mean about $480.00 I will save by waiting a few days.

Gosh, it must be thrilling to have the camera in hand.... congratulations!

Who knows, when I get mine, I may sleep with it next to the bed... right beside my CZ75

Well, back to my digitutors.... I will have them memorized by the time I get my D4.

And for those who want to read... the D4 Manual in English

B & H is shipping the D4... I have talked with a couple of NPS members who got theirs last week..... I guess it is a pretty good camera, ha, ha, ha.

I am suspecting I will receive mine on Thursday or Friday. And on YouTube.... I am told, Aaron Cathcart will be putting up some interesting time-lapse stuff from Colorado shot on his D4!

Yes, congrats Msmoto. (I'm posting on an iPad from somewhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. It's a shame I can't even go on spring break with the kids without keeping up with this).
