I *personally* am not going to place an order for a D4. Something a third of the price might however find it's way into my personal camera bag this year.

My boss has said we will certainly buy one latter on in the year but we are also waiting for the next few announcements before pulling the trigger on 25% of our yearly gear budget. This semester, we have just over 40 students in line and eager to wreck havoc on our stock of equipment so will need to replace all our DX bodies as well before the fall semester begins...

    You teach?

I'm sort of annoyed my school all uses Canon XSi for their teaching purposes. I don't think it is an ergonomically correct camera.

    But I digress.

What happened to the Thunderwire port?

Not in my price range of course, but I'm interested in whatever is in the D7000 range.

Edit- isn't the time lapse function built into every camera above the D7000 (maybe the D3100 and D5100 has it too, I haven't checked)?

I know the D300 has it, I didn't know the D3s maybe didn't have it.

@dormant - it looks like it's a normal RJ45, the question I have is the functionality of this connector - either it's gonna work the same as with WT-5A or not, on the video they stated that the server is build in d4, so IMHO it should work the same, and one could spare a coin or two and get a wifi router instead of wt5.

The connector for the WT-5A is separate from the RJ45 - see photo here.

The D3 has the time lapse built in, so thats not new.
I would have thought the D3s would still have it.

I just wish they added a true RAW image, rather then their processed Raw Image.

Oh well, its still a canon for my astro photography.

    wouldn't grumble at one though.

    Mac.

The time laps is not new, true, but the fact that the camera can make a timelaps video out of those files is.

Puzzled why they only mention using browsers on Apple products for using the HTTP mode with the WT-5A. I'd have thought it could use any browser - unless they've written the software to cripple non-Apple browsers.

it works with Camera Control Pro 2 which is available for Mac and Windows

I have not been a teacher for 12 years now - used to actually hold class in such interesting and diverse places as Cambridge (one of the two UK "Ivy League" universities) and a local college (bit like a community college in the USA). I have never actually been in a position to teach photography, Rocket Science perhaps, but by way of comparison, photography is WAY more complicated... ;-)

I am now a staffer at a university and photography is a part of what I do for them... Ahh Sweet Pension of mine (in just under a decade).....

Sorry if that upsets any freelancers here (but I have been there too!!!!)...

Nearly deleted this email (I've had half a dozen that started similarly today) until I read it further and realised it came from Nikon. I don't think I'm prepared to order one right now, but will certainly take them up on the free seminar invite! :-) I'll let you know what I think after holding the monster.

We are pleased to introduce to you the new Nikon D4.

Decade after decade, photographers have constantly pushed the boundaries of their craft seeking new frontiers. So too have Nikon flagship DSLRs, and the new Nikon D4 is no exception. As the landscape of professional imaging evolves, Nikon adheres to its mission to adapt to these changes and deliver a superlative performance in both still photography and video.

As an NPS member we are pleased to announce that this product will be available through our priority allocation scheme, which means we will endeavour to make sure you will be the first to receive your camera in the UK. To sign up for this scheme, simply place an order with one of our Nikon Professional Dealers and record your order reference number. We will shortly send you an email with further details on how to register your order with us to ensure you are one of the first to receive your new D4.

Look out for your exclusive invite which will be in the post shortly to our NPS Roadshow taking place in February, where you'll be amongst the first to try the camera out.

They are next door to the fire station... no doubt to help out in the event of someone catching fire at the sight of a new - and unannounced - camera.... ;-)

Yes that's right, how'd you know? I've taken test shots of those engines many times, I think the water might come in handy to stop my credit card from melting if they talk me into buying one. :-)

@golf007sd Will do my friend. I don't know if I'm allowed to post this, remove it if not, but came accross this video review today. http://www.whatdigitalcamera.com/news/531320/nikon-d4-hands-on-first-look-review.html

When I lived in the UK, the solicitor I used to purchase a house once, had his offices not too far from there...

Also... Google maps and street view are wonderful, even if the street numbers are often (and certainly in this case), wildly inaccurate!

The D4 is out of my league from a cost/justification perspective, but man, do I want.

    Definitely not need.

Just a whole lot of want. :D

I'm just starting to rub my hands together for everyone with a D3s who will now want one. Let those used D3s prices drop!

Yep, you definitely describe my situation as well. I won't benefit from a high mp camera, but I would appreciate the high iso capabilities of a d3s/d4, but it is just too much camera for me- I would be paying for features (super high build quality, high frame rate, built-in grip, etc...) that I would never use.

I spent 2 weeks with the camera this fall shooting a behind the scenes video of Corey Rich creating the roll out video for the new D4 (search Nikon WHY d4 on vimeo)
The camera is amazing. Tons of great features for the video pros looking for a high end DLSR camera that takes the medium to the next level. Go hit up the discussion on vimeo to see what people are saying about the cam.

Couple of great features for me.
    1. Realtime audio meters
    2. You can move between full frame and crop frame for extra punch with your glass without changing you glass
    3. 720 60p on a full frame sensor, sweet! Now I don't have to drag a 7d 5d kit around to get my low light and action. All in one body.
    4. Interface and button locations totally intuitive and human factor engineered. The camera feels good in the hands.
    5. NIKON GLASS...

So the D4 is $6000 US. Which by my calculation is £3900. Why am I being asked to pay £4800 everywhere? Or do Nikon just think that the British are good for an extra £900? NINE.......HUNDRED.........POUNDS!!! Looks like if I buy one, I'm going to get one of my sisters to get it for me and have a very nice holiday in AZ on Nikon! I could even follow in golf007sd's footsteps and visit Sedona with the change! Anyone want to have a stab at justifying the increased UK price? And NO, the fact that our 3 pin plugs are dearer to produce won't do.

Apples and Oranges? US prices exclude Taxes which are added depending on where you live in the US. Prices on WEX/Jessops include VAT @ 20%! i.e. Add 20% to £3,900 and you'll see that the Exchequer receives most of the difference (£780 of it at any rate)!

Good news is that WEX, Jessops and Amazon sellers are usually locked in an online pricing battle, so I would expect prices to rapidly fall once the camera is available in sufficient quantities.
