It seems awfully quiet around the forum for an announcement night. I thought I'd start the traditional post-announce discussion thread since Niko is MIA.

Thanks for nailing yet another Nikon announcement, Admin. Keep up the great work.

So, is anyone planning on getting one?

Boy I would love one of these guys, but that price is to much for me. I hope this and the D800 drive down the price of D3s and D700 to a point I can pay. If not I can wait for the D400 and see what that has to offer.

The msrp of $6k is too steep for me this year and 36mp from the D800 doesn't add anything that I need at all. I'm going to wait to see what the D400 is and then make a decision to go that route or an used/referb D3s. It will be fun to see what they can do - but for me it is not worth the money at this time.

WOH, there is some cool sh*t in the D4, probably most notably, built in timelapse, built in remote liveview hardware and cropped FX/DX/2.7X crop 1080p video output!

And the ISO is a stop cleaner than the D3s, AND -2EV auto focus vs -1EV on the D3s.

Subtle changes on the outside, but overall, it is a kick arse camera.

Gareth--where did you source the "[one-]stop cleaner than a D3s" figure? I read the dpreview preview and McNally's blog, but didn't see any ISO performance data mentioned.

I think the main question we all should ask is either it's worth the extra $2k, especially when You are photographer not videographer. Trully I don't understan Nikon Pricing policy. Sure the camera is nice and I wish to have it in my bag, but... why the orice difference is so obvious?

Gareth--thanks! Forgot to check that one--watching it now. The reviewer says "about a stop" faster than the D3s. This is about what I expected, considering the higher pixel-count. I had originally posited a one- to one-and-a-half-stop (at most) improvement in sensitivity over the D3s. A one-stop improvement is still significant, given the increased density.

I'm in. I just can't resist! This announcement is really exciting. The one-stop ISO improvement, its innovative wireless remote capability, its improved ergonomics, the illuminated buttons, etc. All of these improvements, many of which may be considered "minor" by some, are significant in total. It's finally real! The Nikon D4!

The D4 is truly and amazing peace of engineering. Would I like to have one...sure! But, given my level of photography, the unit itself offer far more features that I need....at this stage at least.

As for the price...it is all relative...personally for such an equipment I think the price is fair. After all, think of how much sports enthusiast pay for their hobbies. i.e. new off-road dirt bike, a boat, or jet ski..etc..etc.

A full-frame body is going to be in my bag on day for sure...but for now...my D7000 does everything I need and more. For those of you that do end up getting one...my hats off and enjoy your new master peace.

    Cheers.

its very tempting, but if the D800 comes out before Focus on Imaging, I would like to do direct comparison first

Golf does make a good point. People will spend $6000 - $7000 on a wave runner only to wind up taking it out 2 to 3 times a summer. Personally, the D4 is more than I need, but it sure is cool in my book.

True. Now I don't feel so bad about wanting a $6,000 camera. Thanks! (However, there's that $5,400 Kawasaki dual-sport I've been wanting for about three summers now. Then there's that $2,000 All-Clad cookware set I didn't buy last year. Hell, I'll actually be saving money by buying a new D4!).

It's been an exciting day eh? As has been said, a lot of the improvements are "relatively" minor but add up to a far superior product. I like that Nikon have continued to play their Canon beating card with regards to it's ergonomics, it looks like we could all pick it up and start shooting without having to delve too deeply into the manual. Just a quick one though, anyone else think that the 1dX's duplicated function buttons UNDER the lens are an obvious and strangely absent improvement for vertical shooting? Seems like one area Canon have a better design? What new features do I most like about the D4?........ I like the idea of the illuminated buttons (I wish my 3s had them for when I'm shooting in theatres), the new card slot and the wireless upload ability (although how much the dongle costs remains to be seen). Not being a videographer that marked improvement is less important to me, but i'm pleased Nikon have answed the Canon call! Is there enough to justify a trade in?........Possibly, but I like most of you want to wait to let other people be guinea pigs first, and for the price to settle down after the initial rush. Exciting though, well done Nikon :-)

Nikon USA has the WT-5A at, wait for it, $877.

Puzzled why they only mention using browsers on Apple products for using the HTTP mode with the WT-5A. I'd have thought it could use any browser - unless they've written the software to cripple non-Apple browsers.

I see no mention anywhere of the on-board ethernet on the D4. The WT-5A seems to connect to a circular connector. Maybe they use a non-standard ethernet connector so we have to buy the WT-5A instead of just plugging in an ethernet cable.

@dormant - it looks like it's a normal RJ45, the question I have is the functionality of this connector - either it's gonna work the same as with WT-5A or not, on the video they stated that the server is build in d4, so IMHO it should work the same, and one could spare a coin or two and get a wifi router instead of wt5.

@adamz - that'd make sense and be easiest to implement, but sometimes Nikon seem to do things in a non-standard way.

But it means that the almost-$900 WT-5A doesn't do any more than a sub-$50 wireless client.

Wow! I'd like to say I was surprised but I'm not. So let me think a WT-5A or a D5100, rather puts that price in perspective don't you think!

Just placed my order. $6,299 Canadian + 13% tax. The WT-5 is overpriced. $899 here.

Hoping to get it within a month. Can't wait!
