Digital cameras both P & S and SLR's have improvement in leaps and bounds over the last few years but even then some features are lacking, still poorly done or maybe overdone. Here is a list of some things that really annoy me and they are not about Nikon only but any brand

Picture Count: You shoot more than 999 pictures on a card on my D300 and the count goes back to 1 and total pics will max at 9999. Why on earth could the count not max at 999999, then for the life off the camera each picture could have a unique number. The picture file should also incl a tag that would link it to the actual camera that shot it, if you have let say 2 D300

Wireless connection to flash etc should move from that annoying short range infrared to radio transmitter

All SLR cameras should have a viewfinder shutter like on the D700 it annoys me to remove the viewfinder cup and put the cap on, I usually end up using my lens cleaning cloth

Stop this annoying MP race, there is simply a balance of MP, noise, lens quality, and honestly higher MP on lots of cameras, special P & S only results in larger files not actually any real gain in picture quality

I would like all cameras to adapt to the same RAW format, what if you have saved your RAW files for a few years and suddenly your files are no longer supported

Batteries, USB cords, long cords on Chargers, Why so many minor changes to batteries and why could not all cameras use MiniUSB connections, just like all cellphones are going to do and why this long power cord for my Nikon charger

Anyway that is all, I think

I don't think that there is much of a MP race with DSLRs ... the D300s has 12.3 mp compared to D200's 10.2 mp that was announced in November 2005. Though I haven't really been following the PS market.

I think that you can buy radio transmitter flash triggers, mostly they are used in the studio but why not elsewhere. Building it into the camera will increase the price, and the same goes for other gadgets. It is a lot easier to sell them as accessories.

Making a better RAW format gives the manufacturer a competitive edge and us the chance of getting something better. If it were a single standard then we'd have to wait a long while before a new standard is developed, approved, reapproved, cycled through the red tape, approved again, implemented, checked, approved and double checked. I just wish that Nikon and Adobe were better friends and that Nikon would share their NEF data with Adobe, currently it takes quite a while for a new camera NEF file to become readable by ACR.

You can always take the power cord and make it shorter yourself :) I have nothing against the length and on several occasions I've used the lot of it.

I've thought about the 9999 photo cycle also and to me it also seems too low, I don't know what the letters DSC mean,but surely it wouldn't hurt to sacrifice one of them to get a photo count of 99999. My camera now passed the 9999 for the third time, mostly due to hand held shots with slow glass and poor light because of which the camera is constantly on continuous shooting.

You can change those as well. On my D300 I changed them to AAA for a while due to what you guys have already mentioned. I would get files with the same name and the computer would ask if I wanted to replace them. On my D300 I now have it say D30 (D300 wouldn't fit). Haven't yet screwed with it in my D90.

This is my biggest complaint as there should be more numbers than just 4 for numbering pics.

viewfinder on DX cameras - c'm how much can this cost

wifi build in - monty, there's no problems with putting this into the camera and shouldn't cost more than $10

numbering - indeed it's frustrating that once you hit 9999 it starts from 0

IPTC data - should be build in all cameras expect the cheapest ones

unified USB port - pretty much common

unified power cord - uncommon

Yes I was just ranting but:

I don't understand why it should cost extra to change form Infrared to Radio connections. Radiopoppers or Pocketwizard that will support iTTL are very expensive. I am trying to figure out how to connect 2 Nikon Flashes to my camera in highspeed mode.

It would cost Nikon and extra dollar or less to supply both a short and long cable for the charger

Adamz- I don't think cost is the issue with the viewfinders (okay, maybe it's part of it), it's the size of it. Look at the massive housing for the D700 or the D3.

Pretty much numbering is the big issue here- my D40 just past 10,000 images.

You guys forgot a major complaint!

Sorry, but I don't think I want all the bells and whistles on my cameras - although each feature may be inexpensive for the mfr to add, and each feature doesn't weigh much, adding everything would increase cost, increase weight/size, and increase the change of something going wrong. Also, maybe it's just cause I'm getting older, but I'd rather not have 50 million options, buttons, etc., that I have to go through just to change one simple setting or another. I will agree that the picture counter could be better ...

Point & Shoot - The lack of physical buttons to adjust exposure, ISO, & WB. If I have to go through a menu to get there, then you've got an unhappy photographer. A P&S with dedicate buttons for these settings, and knobs at the top for aperture and shutter speed (think Nikon F2) would be perfect.

SLR's - I love shooting with these things. There's lots of features I don't use, but nikon does a nice job of letting them not get in my way. I will say though, that I hate the on camera CLS menu. I always forget to hit the OK button after I make an adjustment, and then the adjustment doesn't stick. Why do I have to do this Nikon?

I would like a small rangefinder (like the Contax G2), full frame, interchangable lens, 12 mp, same speed and handling as D90 (same battery too). A redesigned P6000 that used the ENEL3e battery and processing from a D90 would be ok in the interim.

On the D90 I have to pull the battery occasionally when the camera gets confused and locks. I would prefer a reset. I also would like the control dials to have firmer clicks. The old lift and turn dial the F3 used for ASA settings would be an example.

I hadn't thought about the picture numbering, but I agree it would be better for that data field to expand and allow for serialization of all shots. Saving metadata is so cheap, there's no reason not to capture and store everything (particularly on more professional bodies).

I doubt that the lift-and-turn ISO/ASA dial would be a good example. There really aren't any settings under a wheel on a DSLR that you'd want to lock. I find the lift-and-turn ISO dial to be a great feature on the FM2 so that the ISO setting is locked in place and not accidentally changed.

Have you used a D40/D40x? I think the control dial on my D40x has a sufficient "click" but I haven't tried out the D90 yet. Is it different?

I'm not sure if it's different than a D40, but I have inadvertently bumped it and changed the setting without noticing it. Since then, I tend to check the setting more frequently. I would prefer for the meter mode dial to require the old lift and turn, but I don't tend to change it frequently when I shot. I tend to set it on "A" and adjust aperture as needed for d-o-f or shutter speed. An old habit perhaps from my last two generations of cameras.
