So it seems almost certain we're getting FX lenses in the near future.
Looks like a 24 1.4 and 35 1.4 and *hopefully* an 85 1.4 should be primary contestants.
Anyone have guesses on pricing?
I'll throw my dream guesses out:
24 1.4 = $699
34 1.4 = $799
85 1.4 = $899
I'm assuming longer lenses are more expensive? Maybe I have it backwards. . .thoughts?
I might be off by $200 on each category, given the 85 1.4 is about $1100 right now. . .
24 1.4 and 35 1.4? Nikon's finally bringing out the exciting lenses! I certainly can't an the 85 f/1.4 being under $1000USD. My AIS one set me back $600, even. All your prices sound really optimistic to me, but I'd love you to be right.
shivawrath Unfortunately, your prices are far from probable.
Usually, telephotos are more expensive, but that's not the rule, the general rule is, the more you are far from 50mm, the more expensive it gets and the harder it gets to get great aperture.
thats why the 35mm ƒ/2 is cheaper than the 28mm ƒ2.8 which is cheaper than the 24mm ƒ/2.8
Also, I have no problem seeing a 35mm ƒ/1.4 around 800$, but the 24mm will probably be ƒ/1.8 and cost over 1200 usd. Even the old 28mm ƒ/1.4 was 1200$ when new.
Same with the 85mm, it will be over 1000$ that's for sure.
On my side, I'm really hoping for a 28mm prime instead because the 14-24 already covers the 24mm, even if it's slower and not as sharp has a prime could be. However, a fast 28mm like they used to make would be awesome. I think I prefer 28mm than 24mm anyway. Usually, when I want to go wide, I want 20mm or wider. (on FX)

I guess I'll buy the lenses and flashes I want NOW, I have about $700 to burn and thought I could snag a quick prime, but if you suspect I'm that off, then I'll get the 10.5 fisheye I've been eyeing for my wide angle shots. . .it was either that or the 24 1.4. . .(I was going to use the 24 1.4 on my film body and the 10.5 on my DX). . .
And I really hope for some inexpensive telephotos, would love to see new version of 80-400 with AF-S, new 300/4 VR and maybe some reasonable priced 400/4 or 4.5 with a price tag below $3k - as for the wide end, there are a lot of lenses that can cover the entire focal range, unfortunately this can't be spoken about the range above 300
Man, you guys made me depressed. I was hoping to get some FX glass. All I have now is DX glass. Maybe I should get the old 50mm 1.4 instead then. I wanted a manual focus film camera compatible lens anyway.
In any case, I hope there will be more quality DX glass so that I can make my cousin who owns a Canon be jealous at Nikon's lenses. :D
I was happy they came out with the 35mm 1.8 with such a low price. Now I'm hooked onto fast lenses/primes, unfortunately. :D
NSX, mind reminding me what camera you're shooting on? In any case I think the old 50mm f/1.4 AF will serve you well. I'm with you on loving fast primes which is much of the reason I buy AIS lenses so I can get the quality without breaking the bank.
I have a FM2 and a D40.
The FM2 has a 50mm 1.2.
The D40 has the 18-135 and a 35mm 1.8.
I'm really happy with what I have now, but I wouldn't mind more cheap primes with the same quality as the 35mm 1.8. I might want to go for something wider than the 35mm or something longer.
The old 50mm f/1.4 AF won't autofocus on your D40, so there wouldn't be any reason in getting it, as your 50mm f/1.2 is already a better lens! Oh, i guess the AF one will meter, whereas the the 50mm f/1.2 wouldn't. So there is some reason, but I'd honestly stick with the 1.2.
If you want fast AF primes, there's really not that much you can do on the D40 aside from the 35mm f/1.4 DX and the 50mm f/1.4 G.
If you want metering and don't mind the loss of AF, I'd take a good look at the 85mm f/1.8 AF (~$400)
If you don't need metering and AF, there is a world of non-ai, ai, and ais lenses out there waiting to be had on the (relatively) cheap with excellent quality (though if you're anything like me, this won't reduce the amount of spending you do on lenses, it will merely mean you get more lenses out of the money you do spend).
Yes, I understand it won't autofocus. But it'll be fully compatible with the FM2 while at the same time it will be compatible with whatever larger Nikon body I might buy in the future.
The 50mm 1.4 G is quite an expensive monster. I'll hold off on that. I might look at the 85mm then.
And yes, I have been looking at the used section of B and H, so I'll be looking for primes and stuff there.

The 85mm 1.8 is actually slightly cheaper at B and H.
Either way, both are out of my range for the time being- $400+ is a bit much for the time being.
NSXType-R don't waste your money. I suggest you wait and save more until you can get exactly the lens you want.
And damn that 50mm ƒ/1.2 is pretty rare now I think.. I would use it on the D40 as well.. for portraits.. nice little telephoto.
I'd forget the 10.5 fisheye and save for the 10-24 zoom. The 10.5 is kind of interesting and at 2.8 fun in available light too. But, it is so specialized in comparison to the zoom that it almost never seems to find it's way onto my camera anymore. Before the 10-24, I used it now and then. Now, almost never.
If you can't afford the Nikon or afford to wait for it, go with a less expensive brand of wide zoom.
Same thing happened with my 60 macro. Used it quite a lot until I get the 105. Now it sits.

for sure prices will drop by the end of this year, as the economy is getting better, and dollar weakens
JBL, don't worry, I am saving up right now. Too much to worry about.
And although you may think the 50mm 1.2 is rare, it's still being produced today. I'm surprised they haven't updated it yet.

I'm pretty damn happy with my Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC to be honest... (at US$250 second hand in New Zealand). A non-gelded / full-frame capable / aperture ring lens would be a nice upgrade, but the pricing is waaaaay out there.

So far, after the 50 1.4G was introduced, it went up 10%. . .the 35 1.8 is being sold for 10% more as well. . ..
was debating if I should pre-order these lenses given the historical rise in the prices thus far??
Global economy is still sore, so maybe they'll "correct" those price offerings. . .

@yukselserdar : Welcome.. We / they dont really know.. we are having fun guessing from rumours and gut feel. Though i would say that these guesses are less likely to come to pass within the time frame stated. even though there have been a smell of lenses oozing in the ether lately..

Others have said that their bones are aching in a particular way which indicates a new set lenses are likely to be introduced. But whether its FX or DX its not too clear yet .. :-)
And it is also kind of hints that we all hope Nikon would actual take notice of: Please Nikon we need this Lens, Body, Flash, feature etc and we hope to see them sell for this app cost

seriously, i would love to see a fast 24mm and a updated 35mm. Im not much of a tele-guy.
Compared to Canon they are missing many primes
in the wide angle spectre. So i hope this will come true soon :)
and these were just guesstimates. . .they will throw us a curve ball for sure this fall. . .
