Anything over $1,500 would normally make me pause, and I know this thing will be more than that.

Plus there is the cost of new lenses. I have three AF FX primes (20, 35 and 50 1.4) and I don't know if they will shape up to such high resolution. So I will probably have to buy a couple of zooms.

My feeling now is that if the total cost is less than $5,000 and I can see this camera lasting me for at least 5 years, I'll go for it.

But I know that I will be easily swayed once it is out.

After all, the worlds economy is about to go down the plug-hole so who needs money?

After seeing the DR of the D7000 at ISO 100, I'm actually eager to get a D800 to complement this....
What I've noticed for MY event shooting style, is that I hate noise, and I end up using a flash ANYHOW, so if I'm using a flash, I'm usually shooting at close to base ISO (max 1600 in super dark situations), OR using radio slaves to illuminate the dance floor/etc..Given that, the D800 isn't a bad option as in the D3/D700, I wasn't maxing out my ISO to like 25,600 since my brides always bitched about those pictures being a little "granier" than the other ones...

But let's see....$4000 is about as MUCH as I'd like to spend on another body (new).
And if the D800 is $4000, could you imagine the D4....$6k??

I will definitely wait for the real specs before deciding if the D800 is for me or not.

I just cannot see a D800 with equal or worst ISO than the D700 and the 36 MP is weird to say the least. I have very little trust in that rumor. There may not even be a D800 in the pipeline at all and if there is one, Nikon can pull the plug on it anytime. There is no such a thing as a D800 yet.

It's like debating weather we would really like Santa when we do finally see him for real. Fun but totally futile.

I love people are still buying into the "out resolve" bogus. As Garth pointed out the resolution pitch of the pixels is the same as the D7000. I don't think anyone needs to worry.

On a different subject I like how the poll is 50/50 on the pictures.

For the longest time in NR, all the smart ones have claimed that ISO was the new frontier, the MP war was just a marketing scam as the D3x at 24 MP was already out-resolving the best F2.8 lenses and how Nikon was so much smarter than Canon for providing us higher ISO by not walking the stupid high MP path. Am I wrong?

And the very next day a Nikon 36 MP is rumored, we all wakeup and “off-course” the high MP, negating all the previous expert opinion we have given.

I am too lazy to do the math and surely not knowledgeable enough to be sure of anything but as far as I can tell after watching and reading all the experts and scientists videos and papers I came across in the last 2 years, the D7000 already out-resolves the best F2.8 lenses and has much worst ISO than the D3s or even the D700.

I simply cannot imagine Nikon scrapping the high ISO just to give us non-sense and useless MP.

So, the way I see it, either (a) the rumor is bogus, (b) Nikon has succeeded at giving us a well-resolved 36MP with much better ISO, despite all the pseudo-scientists previously calling it impossible, (c) Nikon is losing its mind or (d) Nikon is forced to use non-sense sensor fabricated by others.

I have voted fake for the picture.

A question for the video guys:

This particular post by admin:

mentions that:

"Headphone jacks, can be input from an external device such as a PCM sound recorder."

Does it mean that while taking a video with D800 connected with a TASCAM DR-07MKII Portable Digital Recorder, the output of the digital recorder will connect to the headphone jack of d800 and that would serve as audio for the video? Will this also disable the builtin microphone on the d800?

If the assumptions above are correct, does it mean that for the setup to work the cable required would be something like: Sescom LN2MIC-TASDR100 Line Out to Camera Mic Level In Cable?

Ladies and gents, when it come to all the technical aspect of how more MP and ISO combination work or don't work, I fine myself getting lost in the conversation...it just goes way over my head and I find myself just scratching my head. Hence, Gareth, TaoTeJared and jonnyapple conversations :P But I do know that Nikon is not the only company that may or may not bring us a camera body that shoots at such high MP to the market. Take for example, the Hasselblad line of cameras: H4D-31 (31 MP), H4D-40 (40MP), H4D-50 (50 MP), H4D-60 (60 MP) and finally H4D-200 (200MP!!!). From what I have read these cameras produce some of the best images money can buy. So can some one please, in plane understandable English, tell my why they have succeeded and if Nikon produces a body that has some of the same feature we think it is bad, thus making those that have been waiting for such a gear to turn their backs on it?

doesn't make sense to me, that's why i am all for it. as long as it is still of a professional quality, and nikon still gives an alternative (low MP high ISO ability) in other models.

there are many digital backs as well as a couple of medium format dslr's. they are hugely expensive and require buying into a whole new system, as well as all of the costs involved in the larger file size.

same lenses, same system, more options = good

Just went and picked up the D700 because I wasn't going to wait for the D800 to come out...and I won't need the larger sensor OR the higher price tag as well...The store I bought my D700 told me that they can't get the D700 anymore...so something has to come out soon to replace it I would think...

But those Hasselblad cameras are all medium format. In my opinion, the noise concern is valid. But then again, looking back, I don't think anyone expected Nikon to come out with the D3's light absorbing incredible sensor. Not even Admin. :D

We'll just have to wait and see what they come out with.

Golf... The Hassy's are all medium format form factor. Nikons are all 35mm FX or smaller, so you are not comparing similar things.

The IQ from the Hassy gear is going to kick just about all 35mm into touch (now I'll get some flak for that), but it simply is the case like it or lump it!

I don't fully understand your question to answer it in a way I think is complete, but lets not also forget that while a D3 is something south of $10k, the H4D-200 is over $40k retail, and it only goes to ISO800 and 1/800sec (is IMO really for studio use under good lights).

I posted some links to a phase one 80MP (another MF digital camera) sample image here in the summer (or commented on one - I can't recall now) and it had much more detail and delivers far smoother yet also sharper images than anything I have seen in 30 years of shooting on 35mm film and for sure 'better' (a subjective term, but it sums that up for me) than anything from the D3 bodies we have used at work. I just can't afford one - and doubt I could justify one either for what I do... not that I don't WANT one ;-)

what is the argument here?

is MF better than 35mm, well in terms of dynamic range and clarity. of course. who said otherwise?

in terms of functionlity in a wider range of aplications, well, this is where the dslrs fit in.

the dslr price, the AF, shutter speed, physical size, ISO and "longer" lenses are all major advantages to a high MP dslr full 35mm system.

I too would love a leica or phase one, but I'm not gonna get one. I WILL get a high MP dslr if it performs like I need it to.

And i will buy more lower MP dslrs if they perform like I need them to.

I think the valid comparison with large MP Hasselblads and a 36 MP D800 is the file size. So many people complain the file sizes will be too large for their computer processor, RAM and hard drive. But how do the Hasselblad shooters do it? They surely work with larger file sizes? Yes, the Hasselblads are studio cameras and don't serve the same function as DSLRs, but that wasn't the point of the comparison. The poster was not comparing high ISO noise between the two camera sensor. He was comparing IQ from a higher MP sensor (which whatever limitations) and file size. If a 40 MP Hasselblad is desirable (for its limited function) why wouldn't a 36 MP D800 be just as desirable (for the same limited function)? If computers can handle the 40 MP Hasselblad sensor's file size why cannot they also handle the 36 MP D800 file size? I think the answer is that if used in the same way as a Hasselblad a D800 would be highly desirable and offer a very inexpensive (in comparison) path to the same IQ. Most complaints about the D800 being "unsuited" to a particular use really relate to uses for which a Hasselblad would be even more unsuited.

If the D800 really does have a 36MP sensor I would expect to see articles titled something like "Has Nikon moved the DSLR into medium format territory?" and "Does a D800 give you medium format image quality for a fraction of the cost?" I suspect we will see some DSLR = medium format? comparisons.

Thank you all for your inputs and point out the difference between the 35mm FX and the medium form factor of the Hasselblad/Phase one. Kinda over looked that when making the comparison. As they say "my bad!"

I have spend the past few days watching videos of how those individual that own and use "medium form factor cameras" and I must stay they do NOT all shoot in "in-door" studios. Many are out in some jungles, rivers, nature setting shooting all kinds of actions. Hell I saw one photographer with a 300mm lens on his Hasselblad H-body neck deep in a jungle river shooting some models.

But back to my question; as donaldejose (+1 for you) pointed out, the argument that the "files" are going to be to big and my computer and hard drive cannot handle it...I find that to be so rubbish...given dollar/per megabyte of disk storage and the modern CPU's is todays computers. I mean after all, If you are going to be getting any camera in these categories then you also better have the right computer to do your post processing...yes?

I trust in Nikon. I do not believe that they would bring to market a new camera body, for those of us in the DX/FX DSLR world, we would not have a use for. After all look at what they gave us with the D7000. Personally I'm looking forward in seeing what their answer is towards the new "bad boy" in the block: the Canon 1D X.

As for file size, you are correct that those with 10 year old computers will have trouble. Even my main office PC is only two years old and the 1Tb disk is mostly full and the dual core CPU needs updating.

A tip for everyone I give is you can never have enough RAM... My 8Gb is about right to avoid issues with editing large files in CS5, but anything over 4Gb also requires a 64bit O/S. If any of that gives anyone problems, then they are not serious about it!! ;-)

The key is to remember that in digital image making, the camera is part of a system, of which the computer is also a part. A decent PC is probably cheaper than the camera is now and is just as important. If you get a larger format camera, get a larger format computer and be done with it.

I suspect you are correct about the IQ comparisons. I'll leave the debates about the validity of them until we get to be able to compare enough decent medium format images and the results of a few shoots using the Nikon 36MP body. I'm not going to speculate more at this stage except to say, that it might be a close run race.

Fun times ahead....

Some are saying it's possible in a few days (Nov. 30th). NR Admin/Peter is reporting that several new products will possibly be announced on this date. We are not sure if the D800 is one of them. Let's hope so.

I sold my D700 last month and prepare for the D800 . SO i think I may need to get a used d7000 now. Getting tired come here to check D800 release date everyday .. I know rumors is trying their best to give us update. But this time is really disappointing.. Big hope on the 30th and big disappointing now .

I'm not sure if anyone else follows other companies camera rumors but this came through for the 5d mk III:

[T]he 5D2 replacement will be aimed at ‘cleaning up’ in the DSLR video market, complementing the video specific 1 series mentioned at the recent Hollywood announcement. It was also suggested that it would not be any more than 18MP, and that any higher MP camera was ‘quite some time off’.

The 1D-x came out with 18mp (& did away with aps-h) giving up on the Higher mp going backwards. Anyone else think this is significant and rather telling? Better Low ISO over resolution?
