I started with my fathers Nikon F301 and liked it. I am also kind of old fashioned in some ways and while Nikon still offered cameras like the FM2, FE2 and later the FM3a others went completely away from these type of "minimalistic" cameras. They never let me down so I never thought about changing the brand.

To make a long story short: my answer is: "why should I use something different?".

I refuse to get involved in any Nikon/Canon debates. When I first started taking photography seriously I looked at what my friends were using. Using the same brand as them and being able to share lenses and other equipement seemed logical at the time. I'm glad I did.

Autofocus, low light performance, available lenses / legacy support. I started with a D5000 with almost no knowledge about DSLRs, and shortly thereafter graduated to a D7000 since its capabilities were in line with what I felt I needed. Now that I've also started shooting film I'm glad I went Nikon since I already have some great lenses for my DSLRs that perform just as amazingly on manual film SLRs.

Simple, I started with a Canon and they switched the mount on me.

I then was given an N6006 with lenses and flash. Once there I just kept going with Nikon, never really looked anywhere else. Nikon has the reputation for having the best lenses and cameras.

I've never looked back and have no fear that the body or lens I buy today won't work with the body or lens I buy five years from now.

it just simply better - built, AF system, buttons layout, high ISO.

Same for me. I had an A1 and wanted a new lens. I figured if I have to get a new camera anyway I will not get one from a company that will not let me use my current lenses with a new body.

My father shot with Nikon point and shoot film cameras and then he eventually got a FM2.

When I decided to buy a DSLR, I decided that legacy support could be cool if I could use the 50mm 1.2 (never mind the fact that it was AI-S and it's not really supported on every camera :D ).

But Nikon was a preferred choice. Also, my cousin got a Canon XSi a little bit earlier. I hated the grip for it, so I went Nikon. I didn't even try out the camera, but that was also partly my fault.

I wanted it for the NY Auto Show the next day, my parents bought it for me the day before.

Of course I had done my research months in advance, but I had suddenly realized I didn't want to go to the auto show with a terrible point and shoot.

I'd like to say it was because i liked Canon over Nikon, but for me it was simple economics.

My Wife had a nikon SLR. Before that my last SLR was a Pentax, but i didnt have any lenses to speak of where she had a couple. When we decided to buy our first DSLR, we decided to go with what we knew and would require the least amount of new lenses. The rest is history.

    Here's another answer!

Because NASA thinks that they're good enough to go into outer space!

There's a reason why NASA chose Nikon over Canon... :D

Think about it- before Nikon, NASA used to use Hasselblad.

They always have and still use both Nikon and Hasselblads. The only times I saw the Hassy stuff lately was from the space shuttle missions. The space station has Nikons on it.

It is interesting to see what tipped the scales towards Nikon for everyone.

I was told part of it was that Canon lenses shattered on takeoff because of the high level of fluorite in them. Also some of the oils and seals they use don't fare well under high tempetures and radiation... The nikon gear goes practically unmodified

    "Why do you shoot Nikon?"

Maybe because my Hasselblad is being serviced?

    Because I'm a snob!!

Seriously, after 4 Nikons.......reliability, output, ease of use, they look the part........and always said wouldn't buy a camera from a company that makes photocopiers!!

Look, most modern cameras are excellent, but Nikon is the most excellent of all!!

I always look at what the real pros use and go that way: What TV monitors are used in video labs ? Sony. What sound equipment are used in studios ? Quad, Bose, etc. What cameras are most used ? Nikon. :)

    HAHAHAHA.... Nice response.

Actually, Hassy USA do a $99 "check-to-spec" deal, where they'll actually do a decent service for you and for a bit more, will replace a few of the more frequently broken bits... Can't remember what Nikon charge if you are not in the NPS 'club'...

Interesting stuff indeed. Didn't know Hasselblad is still being used.

Of course it shatters! It's a Cannon!

No, but to be very honest, think of how many Gs it takes for the rocket to escape the atmosphere. That's a lot of stress on the camera.

I guess Canons really aren't built that great. :D

I started with Minolta. They kept obsoleting my really good lenses with mount changes. I knew Canon was doing the same. So when I started to get out of large and medium format (with more investment than most would ever believe) I bought my first Nikons (an F5 and an F100). I really switched due to Nikkor glass. I did a lot of side by side comparison shots with my Nikons film cameras to Hasselblad and Linhoff and Pentax before I abandoned the larger formats. I found the 8x10 was really one of the best, but even if you are FAST setting up....slower than a Nikon. My experience with Nikon has been ALL positive. It is a great system. That is what I tell many photo pros. Amateurs usually do not ask. I also prefer Nikon colors to Canon colors.

The logical design & build, the company's quality standards. I'm proud to own them.

Now I'm surprised you say that, I'm as much a fan of Nikon as anyone, but I normally see MANY more White lenses at a pro shoot or in a press conference than Black?

    Hi all,

That would have been different a few years ago (overwhelmingly), but it seems that the lenses are more white-ish now.

    Anyone hazard a guess why?

    My best,

    Mike

I was told by a canut it was a "Heat" factor that they absorb less heat and heat can cause the elements, metal, guts to expand and create focus issues. Nikon has/suggests their "grey" lenses for safari/really hot spots sitting in the sun. Makes since, but one would have to be in some real extremes for that to happen.

I love that white D3! Would not like clean it though.
