Well I admit I am not into social media, I understand it is good for business and most people have it already but I am one of the few that have not given in. If they required users to have a FB account I would probably just "troll" at that point.
It seems like now anything posted reguardless of topic is getting all the whinners saying where is my D800???? I want to be rude and post back, the D800 will get released when you prove you can take a good enough picture for "you" to deserve it, but to start an argument is pointless. As I and sure many of you have seen the saying, never argue with stupid people, "they will drag you down to there level and beat you with experience."
Just incase all this negativity is overwhelming, for everyone helping to teach others and share ideas I will say thank you. For Peter, admins, and anyone else that helps keep NR site around, I give a pat on the back and a thank you.
I agree with all the people saying that comments are getting out of hand. I don't like reading through 300 comments of I'm going to canon or where is the d800 to get to the 20 relevant comments. I did get into a discussion with a fellow poster the other day and we decided that the site was not the time or place for the discussion. So we sent a few email back and forth and I got a lot out of it. I think it was a neat experience that I have never had before and prob won't again. Someone with a strong opinion that can back there argument but is willing to listen to your side also.
The comments are crazy now. It would be nice if there was a way to have a repercussion to inappropriate or off topic comments. I do think that all the admin around here do a pretty good job though. Thanks guys.

I haven't read many of the comments on this thread, let alone those on the 'other thread', but can I just say that I agree 100% with monty11's opening rant.
I love my photography; but let's get a sense of proportion. It is a HOBBY; nothing more, nothing less.
Even for professionals it's only a job, not life and death.

this quote is the worst part of a very bad thread. "deserving a product...." what planet are you on ? people can buy whatever they can afford, just like you. did you have to show that you deserved anything that you ever bought in your life ?
are you people seriously saying that people shouldnt anticipate ? shouldnt be disappointed ? this site pulls traffic through creating anticipation for christs sake. its in the name ..... you cannot create anticipation, and then criticise people for anticipating. WTF
the d800 has been rumored for 2 years, which is way too long. i dont think there is any "fault" that is a silly idea, but i think its a very bad show for nikon, as since people have to invest in a system with cameras, it creates a brand loyalty, and by having no communication from nikon to the loyal customers, the loyalty is not reciprocated. the investment of hard earned cash in a camera system shows faith to the company, so i think its acceptable for people to be annoyed when there is no show of faith back to their customers. and faith needs to be rewarded, or its just bad for business.
anticipation can be a great way for companies to get people excited about spending their cash, rumors and upcoming hints, etc etc. but when it drags on fr this long, it imo, crosses a line from excitement to annoyance. keeping people in the dark for this amount of time puts them in an awkward position of not being sure about buying, and not being sure about waiting, worst of all, not being sure about nikon, and creates a lack of confidence, which is bad for business. nikon really should have given some idea that it would be this long, about a year ago.
i gave up the wait yesterday and got a d700, all i really wanted was a d700 with movie mode, but never mind. im not 100% comfortable with buying a 3 year old digital ANYTHING, but im still happy with the purchase, it looks like its going to be a fun challenge.
How about some facts:
-Nikon doesn't run this site or sponsor it.
-Nikon has proven that it sticks to a very rigid timeline of DSLR releases with variances being because of earthquakes, tsunamis, floods and other factors they can not control. The only really "New" body line up in years, was the D700.
-Nikon's 'pro' bodies have always been on a 4 year cycle sometimes with small upgrades ('x', 's', 'h'). Canon is the same.
-"Rumors of the D800" are not of Nikon's doing. They have never played that game.
-All of the Rumors up to this point have been nothing more then people guessing.
-All DSLRs take years of development before release. Speeding this up always has created sub-ideal cameras.
The "fault" of the disappointment lies entirely with the people and is their own doing. I do not feel sorry for those who choose not to inform themselves of Nikon's very predictable release patterns and business practices are and just choose to stomp their feet about it. It is nothing more than self-induced dimwitted selfishness.
Saying "It is poor business practice" to justify a some peoples sick selfish desire for a camera considering the largest flood in 50 years has happened, and then blame Nikon for it, is the true WTF.

-1.6 million hectares = 61,776 mi² = more land area than the entire U.S. states of Georgia, Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania, or Ohio.
-In terms of the United Sates, the flooding would be the 25th largest state by land mass.
-If you combined the total land area of Maryland, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware & Rhode Island, It still would not equal the size of the flood.
Well I guess I just vented on my post (at least I admitted it was rude), but just like my comment didn't make you very happy, comments like:
-its Peters fault,
-people that only care about the "rumored" D800 and nothing for anyones life that has been affected in the past 10 months
-blame Nikon for not planning better
-posting to something entirely different and still complaining I don't have my D800.
These don't exactly make me happy and maybe a few others here.
I go back and laugh at a few post, "like I sold my DXXX camera thinking Nikon would make an improved/newer model. Its been year/months and they have put out nothing for me so I had to buy DXXX and lost alot of money"....and basically rants I am pissed.
Uh Nikon didn't hold a gun to his head and make him sell or buy. This guy tried to out smart the "camera market" and got burned just like so many people play the stock market and get burned. Would I like to sell my gear for top dollar when that time comes, you bet. To sell with out planning ahead is just uh stupid...in Nikons case you need to have the replacement in hand, new products can be hard to get anyway.
Do I believe that an upgrade for the D700 would be nice, yes. Has it been rumored to death and kinda like "the boy who cried wolf", yes. When I got my D700 did Nikon ever promise me a "D800" in 3 years, no.
In your statement you wanted a D700 that shot video, Nikon does make a full frame camera that shoots video if you really wanted it.
A few years ago I bought a D200, a 3 months later the D300 was announced. Do I wish Nikon had told me that there would be a newer camera out in less than six months, yes. Was I part of Nikon rumors back then, no. Do I have any regrets on the D200, no, I learned alot.
There are some people that have to have the latest and greatest, in some cases Nikon would have sold the D200 and then a few months later the D300. Can I blame them for not telling me, no. Cannon does the same thing except maybe the D1 they gave a 6 month window on. I don't keep up with Cannon that much but from what I hear this is excessive for them. Which tells me a lot of things have changed in the past year to cause this type of change, maybe not all for the good either.
I love my D700 but I also don't have the desire or need to shoot video. I need to improve my skills more than a newer camera would improve my results. I hope the D700 turns out to be better than you expected, I hope your only regret is you didn't get it sooner.

Even though I disagree with the points you made, I still think some of your points are valid and we could have had a nice meaningful discussion back and forth but did you really have to state your opinion that way? Was that really the only way you could have made your points across?
It's not so much that anybody here is complaining that people are disappointed as much as the way that people are choosing to (disrespectfully) show it.

While the statistic that the flood covers an area almost the size of Kuwait is true, Kuwait (1.78 million hectares) is actually nowhere near the size of Georgia, Illinois or even Ohio. Area-wise it's bigger than Connecticut but smaller than New Jersey. I should know, I'm from there :-)
But this doesn't diminish the severity of the Thai floods. The sheer number of those affected alone is staggering.

floods in thailand do not affect nikon making a press release, to their customers who have been waiting for an upgrade. some people may have a desire for a new camera, but i think its a bit weird to call it "sick", others may use cameras as their business, and worry about these purchases. nikon should not have kept people in the dark for this amount of time. tsunamis, floods and earthquakes may stop camera production, but they dont stop press releases. so please dont bring up floods as an excuse for anything.
this websites nikon buying guide section has for a long time now, said, "wait, update expected" next to the d700. this very site recommends people to wait, and then you call them sick lol, and you criticise that they are eager for a new camera. what a perfect hypocrisy. this very website writes articles to get people excited about upcoming products and then you criticise people for being excited and disappointed when they dont get released.

It's not sick to want a new camera.
The problem arises if you expect Nikon (or any other brand) to announce something new because of a previous refresh-cycle. To me the fact that Nikon did not announce a D4. D800 or D400 yet means that there is nothing to announce yet. How much would it help if they said: yes, we will have a new camera.
The problem with announcing something new is to find the correct time. Some companies announce new things the day they are available (or only a week or two in advance) and others do it months ahead.
The more in advance you do it the more you push yourself into potential problems. If they publish the expected specs of an upcoming camera they also set the expectation.
Example: let's say Nikon announces the D800 with 36 MP and full HD video with all current modes and some new ones as well and set the release date to six moths from now. Two months later they find that they cannot fulfill that because the 36 MP sensor produces too much heat/noise/whatever and they need to use a 24 MP sensor. With published specs and date they are in trouble. If they didn't do that they can simply publish whatever they came up with once it is a finished product and say: this is what we wanted to do...

Putting together a bunch of unrelated statements and trying to change the subject of the topic does not make a point.
1. I still don't think it will effect the release that much. Maybe 6 months. On a 4- year cycle that is nothing - That is waiting 1/24 longer for it. That has absolutely nothing to do with this topic or me wanting or clambering to get one. I am waiting to see what is released like everyone else. If nothing is, I really don't care - I am still making great images with the gear I have now.
2. Now you are trying to shift the topic to announcements of a camera, and criticizing people's eagerness? The blog is filled with people screaming about 'releasing' the camera, not announcement schedule. The blog is not filled with feeling of eagerness - it is filled with hate and anger. That is not remotely the same thing and that is the topic.
And then you try to shift blame to this site for idiots selling their gear early and getting caught with their pants down? That is again blaming someone else for a persons own faulty decisions. Again, it is their own undoing - not anyone else's.

It is Sick to ignore that camera releases have been delayed because a massive natural disaster has occurred. It is sick to ignore people's hate and anger, not over the death and destruction and the lack of help, but over not seeing a stupid camera release. How would you like to hear that people are angry over a techie product release from your hometown while 100's where dying and you had 7 feet of water in your living room. 2011 will go down as a year of natural disasters for the world, and for Nikon users. However, when Nikon actually does finally release their cameras they almost always are awesome. I am hearing rave reviews on the Nikon I J1. When the D800 and D400 do come out they will be awesome I am betting. I am right now in the last stage of purchasing a Nikon D7000 just to gain better video capability in a package that I am guessing will exceed the D90, D300, and D700 I am using in especially the video area. I also like the size. I still would have liked to evaluate the D800 reviews before making any purchase but.....nothing is so constant as change. And I also live and work in a natural resource industry that can be easily described as "an investment at risk". I can easily relate to, and understand the tremendous impact of natural disasters. In many ways each day and each year that are trouble free are a gift!! And when a great new camera comes along....Rejoice!!

Still, something is off in your calculations. NJ is actually 8722 sq mi. In hectares this is about 2.26 mil hectares (1 sq mi ≈ 260 hectares). This is a little bit more than the size of the floods based on the worst estimate.
