Recommendations on a camera bracket?

Hi all,

I'm looking to get a bracket for my D7000.

I want to be able to mount a flash (SB-900), Rode VideoMic and my Hahnel wireless remote transmitter all at the same time.

I've found one bracket which'll do it, but it got mediocre reviews, and I'm not sure the cables would reach from the devices to the D7000 socket. (The Hahnel cable is very short!)

I know I could just get a 2 shoe bracket, as I don't need to have the Mic and Remote on at the same time as I can't begin video recording remotely... but I'd still like to, to save switching gear in/out the bag.

Any recommendations would be nice.

If you're going to shoot a lot of video, then you may want to look into DSLR video rigs from Zacuto, Redrock Micro, etc.

Basically there's a baseplate that attaches to the bottom of your D7000. The baseplate can accept various rods (in many lengths + configurations). You can then attach as many accessories, grips, loupes, lights, sound gear, etc., to the system as you like.

These rigs can greatly improve the ergonomics (+ stability & balance) of your DSLR when shooting handheld video. However they are rather expensive, and quite bulky & obnoxious when shooting stills (so you'd probably want to detach the camera for stills).

Thanks for the reply Ade.

Yeah I've taken a look and they're quite expensive, but still very nice, something I can aspire to in years to come I suppose.

In regards to the rods you mentioned, are there any recommended brands of these?
I can always just get a bracket with one shoe on that I've seen and just put a rod on the bottom of that. (You can stack them right?)

I've used a friends, it was quite long as it bent when I put my flash on it, any well known brands that do nice sturdy ones?

wireless remote? D7000 as master and SB900 as slave

Well, that's all the gear I have at the moment, the wireless remote is a interval timer remote, not a flash remote.

And good point, the flash wouldn't be used with video either, so I'd also look into getting a light for video.
But I'd still like to be able to switch between stills and video easily without switching what's in the shoes so much.

Haha, that's true.... but aside from the wireless remote, which is tiny, people normally hold things like this right?
I've seen some which is just a hot-shoe to 2 cold shoe adapter with a video light and mic on.

Khaelas, what about getting some velcro and putting one side on the remote and one side on the bracket? It might be nice to just be able to remove the remote quickly.

Yeah good suggestion jonnyapple.

I've seen a bracket I really like (A C-shaped one) that has two shoes, but using the velcro will allow me to put the remote on too.

Brilliant!

Still, since I'm new to the scene, is there a brand that make superior brackets, for stability/build quality?

The one I'm looking at buying is only £9.

For video it's quite hard to hold a DSLR steady with just your hands, especially when loaded up with a video light, microphone, loupe, transmitters, follow-focus, etc.

Most of the video rigs let you use your shoulder for support, either by pressing the camera against your shoulder (like a rifle), or by slinging the weight over your shoulder (usually with help of a counterweight).

Unfortunately the ergonomics for video is very different than for stills. E.g., try doing a vertical stills shot with the camera attached to a DSLR rig... not happening.

You might want to invest in separate systems:

- For stills, maybe a simple "off-camera flash" bracket. Or better yet, get a light stand instead, which is much more versatile (you can put on light modifiers like small umbrellas or softboxes). Look at strobist for ideas.

- For video, maybe make yourself a slider / shoulder support combo. (The Glidetrack Shooter is good for inspiration). There are many DIY slider tutorials on the net.

Anyways those are just random suggestions!!

ps. when I travel I sometimes try to handheld with just the camera & a loupe. Works ok for short sequences but for longer ones I use my tripod (which I also use as a lightstand when doing stills).
