9000 shutter actuations. Partof me is very suspicious on this, but the guy has a good feedback. ive been thinking about getting a d700 for some time, this seems to be too cheap. he says he needs a lighter camera to go backpacking, and the like. believable, but would any of you sell your d700 for so little?

There is not one listed or sold now. Probably already pulled or it was a beginning price.

If something seems too good to be true it usually is... ;)

I tend to agree.
This is the link its current at 1125.00 USD. It looks like he started it at 250.00, and if i read correctly, no reserve. makes me suspicious.

Looks about right... I would be cautious though as he doesn't list a reason for selling it (I like to see one). Just a warning Ebay is a commercial site and links to one really aren't allowed on the forum so you may be asked to take it down :(

I have had luck though like getting a 50mm for $12 or a 80-200mm f2.8 for $250... I know somebody who got a D700 for around $1200 off there once...

Shutter count means nothing. It can be reset. Ebay feedback means nothing as well.

Re: the link --- I didnt realize that went against policy. My fault sorry.
Yeah, I'm not bidding on it. It seems to good to be true, and other than "wanting a lighter setup" (which is certainly believable) the user gives no good reason.
I just was shocked when i saw the price, but when i realized he never set up a reserve, and started the bidding at 250.00 USD makes me SERIOUSLY wonder. I mean if he didnt reset the shutter count, its basically an unused camera. And whats he doing with all his FX glass (for the "lighter setup")

I am on ebay every day and have seen 100's of D700's start at .01 cent. That is noting odd nor suspicious. There are currently 12 auctions that are still under $2k. Most end up being bid up to around $2,200. I have seen a low of $1,800 before with a buy it now price but those are far and few in between. Any D700 ending in the next 24hrs is already at $2k. I think I found the auction you are referring to, and I don't see anything wrong with it. 5 days left and it is at $1600 - that one will go for about $2,300. If it is within 5 hours of ending and it is $1000 - then that says everyone thinks something is wrong with it except for a few who are willing to gamble. 2+ days out - it means nothing.
If an item always goes for $2k then many people will save a few $ and list it at a very low price without reserve. Why would you if they always go for over 2k?
If it has an actual photo of the item and what it comes with, they don't have multiple others with the same photos, they have a history over 90 days, and they don't request you to contact them before your bid, your are probably fine. Always use paypal. If something goes wrong, they will get your money back as it is held for about 5 days after the ship date to insure it is not fraud. Make sure returns are accepted. Buy everything from the country where your reside or N. America (Canada/US). Follow that and you will be fine. I have bought 100's of various bodies, lenses, etc. on ebay and never had a fraud case following that.
I'm with Niko - Shutter count absolutely means nothing unless someone actually admits to having something like 90k+. If a camera is used hard, (beat to hell) it could have 2000, dumped in salt water first day out, dropped from a car - there really is now way to know for sure.

Im with Nikon and TaoTeJared too. Something to be suspicious of however is if they don't post a pic of the actual product and no description but put 3 stock photos off the nikon site up. Also if the seller asks you to purchase it not on ebay for $1500 steer clear...
The worst I personally got was a 35-70mm f2.8 that had fungus in one of the center elements. I contacted the pawnshop that ebayed it to me and he gladly refunded me for it (it was sent back). He didn't even know what fungus was...

Plus 1 Tao, I prefer to see someone who has been a member for a few years though, and has a history of selling similar items at the same price.

And as always...if it seems to good to be true it probably is. Buying new stuff it makes no sense at all really especially if they aren't an authorized dealer.

I somewhat agree with tcole. It was just a number that was too appealing. But because it was too appealing it was too scary. :) Personally, I use ebay for buying books and things that if i get ripped off that it doesnt put a serious damper in my life. I dont make money on photography, its just my expensive hobby.

As an interesting note - I have been tracking D3 ebay sales as well and they have dropped below $3k on average (depending what accss. included). Most are going for $2,800 and look to be in really good shape. I think people are starting to off load them getting ready for the D800. That usually happens about 4 months before people can get their hands on a new product. Back-up bodies go for sale.

I actually use Amazon a lot and I feel like their rating system is better than ebay, plus since the money goes through Amazon it makes me feel better for some reason. I feel like if I had a problem it would be easier to deal with them...I don't really like to use paypal and all that very much. Ebay to me can be a bit confusing...I had an auction not too long ago that I forgot to put no international sales and wound up having to ship it to Canada somewhere...it worked out fine, but I was worried for a while. Although I know there isn't as large of a selection with Amazon and of course you just pay the price someone has their items at.

I have to admit, that was my biggest hope in regards to the d800, that people would abandon their d700's. As a hobbyist, Im always one camera behind.

Glad this discussion wasn't closed I think its a relevant posting although we have discussed Ebay before. There are some good deals to be had if you are smart and careful. Try contacting the seller and ask him why he is selling? Ask for pictures too. Although anything can be altered as Niko mentioned.

There is a ton of fear mongering about ebay that 90% of the worries just no longer exist. Scams were easy to find years ago, but are all but gone today. As anything else, the horror stories stick in people's mind much longer than the "normal" transactions.
You can get ripped off from the "used" side and bad sellers from Amazon much more easily than ebay anymore and never get your money back. Most of the money actually does not go through Amazon - it just appears that way. Paypal has 1000's of ways to make sure you don't get ripped off as well as procedures if someone even hacks your account and yanks all your money. (Happen to me before. 5 days 90% of my money was back in my account, 10 days 100%.) Amazon doesn't have anything close to that.

Ebay has been a great resource for me over the last 10 years, as well as Amazon. I prefer ebay for the reasons that Tao said above. Without question, I have more problems dealing with Amazon sellers than I do ebay sellers.
Ebay is set up to screw the sellers is anything ever happens. Years ago, I was selling some used industrial equipment for my boss. I listed everything correctly, took lots of photos, etc, and some idiot bought a freezer and plugged it in as soon as it got to his door, which blew the compressor. I had photos of the freezer with ice on the door, a thermometer, signed/notarized statements, as well as numerous articles on why you shouldn't plug a freezer in for at least 12 hours, and still, this guy was able to have paypal give him a full refund and my ebay account was terminated.
In contrast, I once bought a "good condition" lens that was missing the rubber rings, had a small dent in the barrel, and had haze. Amazon pretty much told me that they had no power to do anything and the seller wouldn't refund my money.
Like Tao said, years ago, scams could easily be found. For the most part, serious bidders knew what was going on and just didn't bid. Now, the listings are so complete that you really have to look to find awesome deals (like a 28-70 f2.8 with pristine glass and slight squeak in the AF motor for $450). Anymore, much of ebay is just as good as going to BHPhoto, Adorama, etc. for used gear (in fact, I think both sell on ebay).

I disagree
I prefer to buy from B&H, Adorama or Keh.
there are a lot of dishonest people out there, and on top of that the selling prices are too high on ebay.
you can go to the above listed merchant and get equipment listed as less than pristine for much less than the "in very good condition/or nearly new" and then find out that the B&H is in better condition.
how many time have you seen on different blogs someone is having problems with some type of equipment and they will say " going to have it repaired and list it on ebay"
sorry, too many dishonest people on ebay, some guys even say they buy to sell over, therefore this is how they bought it and they are selling it as it is.
I prefer the B&H Adorama and Keh, they tell you its been tested and will accept returns on all equipment if the you have not caused the damage.

The kicker is casperwb, On ebay I can get lenses for 50% less than any of the big name places. $205 for an old 50mm 1.4 - Ha! I got one for $30 and it looks, feels, and works like it was never used. And someday I will sell it for around $100 or more. This is how I have amassed my collection, tried and upgraded my equipment for years. I have probably bought and sold around 400 items - almost all photography stuff. Never scammed, one item broke in shipping that UPS insurance covered, and had one lens that didn't show up with the hood (seller forgot to pack) so they gave me $20 back so I could get a new one.
If I'm buying new or see a need for a warranty, I always get my stuff from B&H or Adorama. Used, I get much better equipment (condition) for much cheaper off of ebay. Not everyone who buys photo cameras and lenses know about B&H, Adorama and Keh. And those are the people (who bought equipment and it has just sat for years with little use) I want to buy equipment from. B&H, Adorama and Keh almost always seem to get items that are in good condition, but you can almost always bet it was certainly used a considerable amount - reducing it's life.
I buy and sell lenses all the time and actually make some good money that I use to upgrade or to try different systems. At any time I have about $3-4,000 rolling around in used equipment and I usually double my money every 3 years. Buy low - Sell high (or average mostly ;) There is nothing I do or view that as dishonest. Everything works as it should and usually I get CLAs for all the lenses I'm going to sell. Almost all of my items go out better than I received them.
There are a lot more dishonest/ unethical buyers than sellers IMO. I have had multiple times where people have bought a lens, broke it and have tried to return it saying I scammed them. If something broke in shipping, that is what insurance is for but hell once, the front element was cracked in half and they tried to return it weeks later - Not sure what they did to cause that. Other times I have had someone buy 3 of the same item from different sellers, try them, and try to send 2 of them back to people like someone would testing lenses from B&H. I also run into people who think they can just buy an item, use it for two weeks or for an event and return it on a whim or when the job is done. I can not stand those people, and they can't seem to understand how wrong or unethical it is.
Every time, Ebay & Paypal have stood behind me. (as BrownewellPhoto said, take many pictures - I even take pictures of the packing of the items and send it to the buyers.) For these reasons above is why most will not accept returns - not because they are scamming someone, but because buyers pull cr@p like that. I now only offer 3 day returns because of buyers that do that garbage. If you have to pay for shipping/listing/selling multiple times, you can really loose money fast. Thankfully it doesn't happen often.
I will say, this my experience in the USA working with people from Canada, US, Japan, Australia and Russia. Russia has always scared me, but I have always had great luck and great sellers. Other parts of the world, I'm not sure about.

as with all your post TTJ, and this one most of all, this one, character and honesty shows through.
wish everyone on ebay were like you.
however, if wishes were horses beggars would ride and I would have:
the Nikon 180mm f2.8, 200mm micro, 400mm f2.8 ED/VR and a carbon fibre tripod.
sigh
