@Shaft01 ... Did you also install NX2? If not, even if you are going to use something like Lightroom or other editors, that might be what you need as well. This is the 'official' Nikon program, which while many don't use it, there may be all sorts of stuff needed and I suspect if you talk to Nikon about it not working, then they might expect you to install it ... be prepared for that is all I'm saying.
To Force W7 to download and install a driver, turn the camera off and disconnect it from the PC. Then delete the existing device from the "Devices and Printers" screen (highlight it and hit the Delete key) then (MUST DO THIS) connect the PC to the internet, and then reconnect the camera to the PC and then turn the camera on. It will download any extra files it needs from Microsoft, otherwise a reinstall will not work, if it is missing anything.
Right clicking on the icon reveals very little indeed about the camera - doing a regular double-click on it should open a window with a battery power meter and capacity of the memory card meter in the top half and several selections in the lower half. If you see valid data in the top half (like how much % of battery remaining) you know it is connected properly.
