I am a novice in photography and I currently own a Nikon D5000 with its 18-55mm kit and a 55-200mm zoom as part of the package I bought. I am currently planning on buying a prime lens for my DSLR. Is the AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G recommended? How about the AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D?

I am also very confused with the topic of crop factor regarding my D5000 and these lenses. Is it true that the 35mm becomes 52mm and the 50mm becomes 75mm because of the crop factor?

Buying a prime lens is really making it very difficult and confusing for me. I hope someone can clarify things for me. I am also in a very tight budget and these are the only lenses I can afford.

    Thanks!

Both are good but only the 35mm f/1.8G will Auto Focus with your camera. You need to use "G" lenses. You could use the 50mm f/1.8G though.

Crop factor is 1.5 x the focal length.

Check out articles on the web for beginning photography for some of your questions. Pop Photo has a lot of good articles for beginners. Your questions are more in depth then we usually get here and that and other sites will be able to give you tons of info.
