    Hello,

My name is Paulo and I'm from Portugal. I'm waiting for the substitute of D300 for about one year a Nikon releases only the D300s. So I'm desperate to buy but at the same time I feel that I will be doing a bad deal since Nikon is releasing the D400 soon.

So could you please give your opinion if the D400 will be that much of an improvement versus the D300s?

    Thank you so much, Paulo.

It should be an improvement but I wouldn't expect it till 2011.

    Hello Adamz,

Thank you for the reply. Really, is it going to be that long... :(

Being that the case I will consider the D300s now.

    Regards, Paulo

If the D300s does what you need, buy it. The D90 does almost everything I need, but it won't meter AIS lenses, so the only choices I have are D3, D3x, D700, D300 and D300s. Since I'm other-wise very happy with my D90, I'll opt for the D300s. Gives me the metering I'm seeking. I don't need more Mega-pixels - 12 is plenty for my needs. (In fact, the D40 has produced some of the best photo's I've seen in recent years - a photographer friend loves it, carries it almost everywhere and shares what he gets. Help's he's a private pilot and shoots extensively from the air over San Francisco.)

I also don't need full frame, so for me the smaller size and lower cost of the D300 makes it the most desirable. Getting the D300s, just gives me a couple of improvements that I might find valuable (multiple memory cards).

The problem is that Nikon is using Sony sensors and if you were to follow the Sony rumors there is no A700 replacement as of yet. There is new A500 17.2 MP model which will most likely be a noisy crappy camera at the best. If you have seen reviews on dpreview of late it is difficult to increase MP and maintain overall quality, like a balance between quality and high ISO performance.

Therefore we have to see a new SONY slr with better picture quality at higher MP before there will be a D400 to be had

Dear bmxdad, thank you for the reply. The D300s does everything I need except for higher ISO and the full HD video with stereo sound integrated, that one really lets me down because I was counting on it.

Pete also mentions that D400 (next model that might have this addition) is a long way down the road, so I’m really confused in this matter, do you understand my crossroad?

If I had information that D400 or similar was coming until the end of the year maybe even 1st quarter 2010 I think I would wait but 2011 is a long time to continue waiting for this addition…

Thank you so much to both of you for your comments. Please fell free to comment on this reply and I will also wait for some comments from other colleagues.

    Regards, Paulo.

pcristao - look at the nikon camera cycle, and You will see that most of the time's it's a four years cycle in the dXXX range, and that the new model usually shows after new Dx level camera is released, and both d3 and especially d3x are still rather new cameras

I agree with the other posters. D400 will not be out any time soon. Early release would probably be in time for Christmas 2010.

I would not hold out buying a camera now, because a better one will be out in a year or so. You'll never buy if you keep waiting. As soon as the D400 does come out, there will be rumors - some accurate - about the greatly enhanced capabilities of the D500 or whatever.

Go for D300 today, it has everything that matters same as D300s and is currently on discount, or wait a year or two for 3000$ D400.

For $200 or 12.5%, I'll wait for the D300s. More likely to be saleable or tradeable in the future for a higher price, plus I think the dual memory card capability worth something. If the spread increases, then I could rethink it.

    Good morning fellows,

Thank you for your posts! Considering that everybody agrees that the D400 is going to be release only by the end of 2010 or beginning of 2011, I will be buying the D300s.

At this point I don't own any lenses from Nikon so I'll start a new post asking for your expert advice on this matter.

    Best regards, Paulo Cristão.

I was about to post the same question. It's been 7 months since the talking, any news? I am about to buy the D300s to replace my D70. I bought some DX lenses and I'm very ready for a new camera. I have a trip to Europe in June 2010 and would be nice to have a new camera.

So any more news on the rumors of the D300s successor? I hear rumbling that Nikon is about to announce something new.

    Thanks!

Nothing new posted or in the news that I've heard of. I'm also about to buy the D300s too and don't see any real alternative.

My guess is that you see a d700 update before D300. The D400 will probably launch alongside the D4, which could still be a good way out. They might, however, release a D300x (D300 w/ more pixels).

I have been waiting for a replacement camera my self as well since I bought my D300s but it looks like we have to wait till June or July until we hear anything. I wished Nikon was more transparent with information so we know what they are cooking, but what can you do that's Nikon.

As far as D300s goes, it all depends on what you want to do with it! If you only wan it for photographing then it is an amazing camera but if you're main use is video than you will be way disappointed unless you only shoot outside. Camera doesn't have any manual control on D-MOVIE so you end up with grainy footage when shooting under low lighting condition.

Thanks Guys, your comments just confirms what I read on the blogs. I think I will decide to purchase the Nikon D300s (it was that or D90) as my upgrade from D70. I think I will like the improvements.

Paolo, have you considered getting a D90? If you know why you need the D300s instead of the D90, then get the D300s. If you're getting the D300s just because you want an upgrade, the D90 might be enough for you and you can use the money for other gear.

Hey Jonny, Paulo's post was 7 months ago! I'm sure he already bought the D300S.
