This is from DC Watch. They have a preview of the D300S. Scroll down to the bottom to listen to the shutter operating.

Though it's not as quiet as I thought it would be it's still music to my ears!

I prefer the continuous sound :D - apart from the fact that I think we all need to visit some specialist, as we are loosing our time to listen shutter sounds :D

It isn't really that quiet as to warrant a separate mode.

Every decibel matters when you don't want to be noticed. It's why the old rangefinders where so much fun. You continued to seer you subject as the picture was taken, and the sound was so unobtrusive, you didn't break the spell.

Kinda why I'm hoping for an improved P6000.

I was at a wedding this summer where the photographer (a cannon shooter) was taking shots of the ceremony from the balcony. The shutter click was actually very distracting.

In this quiet mode the mirror stays up the whole time so what we're actually hearing is just the shutter blades opening and closing right? Point & Shoots have electronic shutters (no moving shutter. CCD is just on or off) so that's why they're virtually silent.

    Do I have that right?

Hey, I wouldn't mind a quiet shutter. I was in a museum once and even on my D40, which I thought was pretty quiet anyway, was extremely loud and obnoxious in there. Every little bit counts.

I would have liked a quiet shutter option at that point.

And I don't think point and shoots are completely silent. At least on my old ass point and shoot, a Nikon Coolpix 3700, I still hear a click clack sound- I'm not sure what the hell it is, but it does make noise when I hit the shutter.

Back to the main topic, wow, the D300s is a speed demon. :D

That shutter sound does sound pretty good. And yes, I do agree, if we are "turned on" by shutter sounds, we do need help. :D

Some point and shoots do have little shutters NSXType-R. Since they're so small they have less of a distance to travel than a DSLR's shutter. Because of this they're relatively pretty quiet.

My therapist says I need to discuss my fetishes more openly. She says it doesn't help to internalize things. It was her suggestion I start this thread. She said it would help me to understand that I am not alone. :^)
