Wow, thanks mb !!!
Your photo reminds me of what I saw when I woke up on admin's front lawn the day after the D300S release party :^)Posted 3 years ago # -
I saw this young woman, maybe even a girl, sitting on a street beside a few garbage bags and other rubbish. She had some sign with some info of her misfortune. She was crying. My heart was totally broken. Such misfortune being around us everyday yet we decide to ignore it and move on with out lives preoccupied more about material well being than anything else. I felt so shitty taking this picture. i didn't have the heart to stop by and take a picture, I just took a hip shot, and moved out of the area. I feel so shitty now. I am such a hypocrite. i should have stopped and see if I could help her or something. I am an asshole. Forgive me girl. I should have stopped and asked you what's wrong.
New York Reality
Edit:
Looking again at the girl, I am pretty sure she saw me taking the picture. I feel even shittier now.

I wouldn't say you taking the photo makes you an automatic athol Poster, but that's often the dilemma faced by photojournalist.
Kevin Carter felt that way when he took a graphic photo of a starving child. He felt so bad about not helping the child that he killed himself because of that guilt. His photo went on to win a Pulitzer Prize.
WARNING disturbing photo
http://flatrock.org.nz/topics/odds_and_oddities/ultimate_in_unfair.htmI don't mean to make you feel worse Poster. I just want you to understand that what you captured and what you are feeling are real. Photography isn't always birthday parties and weddings. Your NOT a super hero and whatever emotions she was going through, you weren't going to fix.
Photojournalism newbies quickly learn about the emotional consequences of shielding yourself behind a viewfinder. Just make sure you come out a better person because of it.
Chin up Poster it's a good photo.

"Uh oh, here we go with the color preferences again ! Adam doesn't hearty's picture hypnotize you? It made me shoot beer out of my nose when I first saw it!
What kind of monitor do you use? Maybe your monitor needs calibrating or have you gotten too use to seeing in B&W? :^)
I do a lot of cmyk printing so I usually boost the color up a bit to compensate for dull paper, but my lawn really is THAT green."I agree if I understand you correctly. I think adamz needs to look inward if his colors aren't to his liking.

I guess I need to get me a Spyder and check my screen, as it sounds that only for me the grass is too green on Niko's photo.
poster - I really like Your first picture on this page (the one with bicycle) - very nice timing, as for the second... that's life, don't fell bad about this, If this gonna make You better, try to find this girl, and take her out for coffee or lunch
niko - I really admire Your datamining skill, as for the link You've posted, once again brutal but true life

Thanks guys. It's kind of hard to be an observer through the viewfinder. I am gonna go out and try to find her today.

@heartyfisher, this reminded me of a photo I took ages ago before I came over to the dark side or knew anything about photography for that matter:

Morley looks like he's tired of being your model Regulator75. Rollei Rex gives me that same look sometimes :^)

Hey poster, yours young and still unspoiled soul touched me deeply; girls and boys seating and crying like that are passed unnoticed all over the world all the time.
I wonder if we could make a difference by just paying attention …Posted 3 years ago # -
Mb, I don't think Poster's soul is that "unspoiled" ;^)
But seriously Poster keep us informed about what you find out.
And while we're still on this photo ethics topic I recommend you guys checkout the latest issue of "AmericanPhoto" magazine. (Sept/Oct 2009) It's dedicated to photo controversy. Lots of powerful and very graphic images dealing with the dilemma photographers endured because of the photo's they took. I highly recommend it.
For those outside the USA checkout the exhibit the article is based on (but unfortunately this link only shows 1 picture from the exhibit)
http://www.elysee.ch/index.php?id=134&L=1&tx_exposition_pi1expoUID=75
Edit: I found a link to video from the exhibit but I wont post it since it contains some troubling and offensive images that aren't for this forum.

NikoDoby and MB
I tried to find her but to no avail I didn't. There are hundreds like her in New York City alone. Mostly I feel bad becasue I could have literally change her fortune, well maybe I am overexagareting, but I had more or less $200 bucks in wallet from my birthday money from few days ago. I didn't really had the need for it. I could have stopped and at least see if she was alright and what she needed. I wouldn't think twice about giving her the money she really looked like it could have changed her fortune. I don't know I am no samaritan neither is my soul "unspoiled" like MB said. But it really got to me that in a city of 8 million people there is so many people in such a dire fortune. And nobody seems to care. And I honestly ignored her as I passed her by, but then as I was reviewing the photos from the day I got really angry at myself and my utter lack of human compassion. I ignored her like I did other people for the past 8 years of living here in NYC. After seeing people like her and others of similar fortune everyday, one just grows to ignore it and live with it. Sometimes all it takes is a little compassion and stopping by and seeing what's their story might not change their fortune but at least it will give them care that there are people who care. I am such a hypocrite. I will end now. Don't want to turn this into a despair thread.
Edit: Kind of feel stupid about opening myself like this. Usually i am tough skinned when it comes to emotional stuff and what not.
Edit: NikoDoby
I just read that issue of AmericanPhoto. It's a good read.

Poster don't be so hard on yourself !!! There's lot's of despair in the world. Don't make the assumption that by you giving this woman some money it would of solved her problems. Money is only a short term solution. OR maybe she just got off the phone with her boyfriend and was really pissed and by you offering her money you would of just insulted her and made her feel much worse. You just don't know... too many variables that we will never know!
Many moons ago, I interviewed and photographed a homeless man. It was during Christmas (you know for a feel good be thankful for what you got kinda story) and I really felt bad about just walking away without helping him. During the interview he mentioned he could use a warm blanket due to the cold.
My guilt forced me to go and buy him a big fuzzy blanket, but when I returned he had already moved on and disappeared into the streets. I took the blanket to a shelter instead knowing it could help someone else but then I felt even worse just offering to donate only one blanket. So I offered to donate my time and helped with a toy drive they were putting together.
It does you no good to feel so bad towards yourself. Like I said take the experience and be a better person because of it BUT move on...
And don't worry about letting your emotional guard down. It's good to release whats building up inside. It's better than starting a revolution... :^)

You certainly are right NikoDoby. Can't fix "world's problem" all by myself. But what I learned from this self realization is that we can at least stop by and see what's wrong, listen and show them that there are people who care. Cheers mate, thanks. It certainly is nice to let the guard down once in a while.

Very nice Regulator75.

It is certainly a strain having a guard up all the time, are you so afraid of what others think about you?
A walk

I have been a bit busy lately and also suffering from Gout again.. :-( thats part of the reason I have not been posting here.. The other part is the thinking and sorting out that was triggered by Posters' image and the subsequent posts by Nikodoby. Thanks guys.. .. It kind of highlights whats been going on in my photography as well. We photographers tend to "see" more than the average person I think. and we kind of have some responsibility to show what we sometimes don't want to see.. The following image is just an example of some photos I have been taking recently. I have been wondering why I have been taking photos like this .. The recent posts have cleared it up for me. ( PS Thanks Niko for that Jewel video )
