This lens seem generally unavailable. Does anyone know when and whether it is due to be updated? Or whether it is due for another production run.

It is orderable item so if you can wait for it I am sure you could order one from a nearby Nikon shop.
On the other hand you could get newer, better, more useful and sharper 105mm f/2.8G AF-S VR Micro NIKKOR and TC-17E II Teleconverter for less money and better results IMHO.

Not a bad idea for now. I already have the 105 you mention, but want a bit longer working distance. I planned on getting TC's for the 200. Should just pick up the 1.7 for now - gets me a 178.5/4.5, although without autofocus. At macro distances autofocus isn't much of a loss. Thanks, I'd given up on the TC issue since they aren't usable on my 70-300.

    105mm f/2.8G AF-S does AF with TC-17E II.

How strong is a lens with a TC on it? Do you need to baby it a little bit because it might snap off, or is it reasonably strong?

it's really reasonable strong, I carry 70-200/2.8 (a 1.5kg lens) attached to tc17 and to body (d90,d200 or f100) and vere had any problems with it - neither it looks or feels like it's gonna break

@NSXType-R - the question is actually is your camera strong enough to hold lens with TC attached. D90 and above have metal made bayonet carrier and are strong enough to hold even 600mm lenses (couple of kilograms actually).
You should not use it instead of a hammer though.

Thanks adamz and mb. I was curious because I haven't used a TC or a huge lens before. Maybe in the future, though. :D

The cool thing about the Nikon cameras is that they're all nicely made- I don't know of any recent DSLRs without a metal bayonet. Of course I wouldn't dare carry a D40 with a TC and a 70-200 without some support on the lens itself. :D

I rechecked and had to update on this one, AF-S VR Micro 105 f/2.8 will not AF if used on any TC, it is mountable though.
AF-S VR 200, 300 and 400 f/2.8 will all AF, AF-S VR 70-200 f/2.8 will too but, for some reason, this 105 will not so if you need AF do not use it on TC.
    Sorry ...

mb - if it's mountable, why it wouldn't focus? as for technical usage of TC there's nothing inside apart from glass, all contacts from one side are on the other side, and with f/2.8 there shouldn't be any problem to focus - although I don't have the 105vr so can't check it myself.
