I was shooting in poor light and had to use m focus i was using a newer afs 16 to 85 lens and i assume the motor is in lens I forgot that there are 2 switches on lens marked af/m and m on body af and m i switched only the lens and not body and then later as i was looking thru the manual i read the caution re damage i assume that the lens will not operate in the af mode if either of the swithes on the lens or body are in the m mode and no damage will occur as this only applys to older af lenses where there is no motor in the lens is this correct thank you

I just moved into digital i had been using a nikon 2020 that i bought around 1988 i have a couple of of primes and a telephoto this camera was recommended to me as my old glass needs the motor in the camera. I picked up the newer lens with it the 16-85 for everyday. superb but not great in low light

make sure the camera is turned off
set both switches back to autofocus
if the camera works as it should, that is auto focuses, then it is okay.
some lenses have m/a m which allow you to manual focus while in auto focus, that is fine tune your focus e.g 70-300vr
and then some have a m and I usuall turn both switches off as a precaution if I ever use them in manual, which is hardly ever.
and then my auto focus "D" lenses have no switches as they do not have motors but depend on the dotor in the body to drive them, turning the body to m just disables the auto focus and leaves you in manual.
I have lenses that I use only in manual, like my macro, all others I use auto focus even when I prefocus.
If the camera is working, I would not worry about, it is more dangerous to change your lenses without turning off the camera and shorting out the contacts.

The only time you need to worry about throwing the switch on the body is if you use non AF-S or AF-I lenses. That means turn the body switch to M if you want to manually focus AF-D or early AF lenses.
