just bought an external stereo mic for my d7000 on camera video and sound is good but thru hdmi playback no sound to tv monitor great picture though ?? have checked manual and tv settings but stil no sound

I'm assuming since you say the sound is great you do have audio when played back on a computer. What's your audio setup like? Are you just trying to output the sound on your TV speakers?
I know it's not a general problem with the D7000. Both mine and my sister's output sound through the HDMI out (including when the video is recorded through an external mic, but it doesn't sound like that's the issue for you).

Try another cable. Yours may be damaged or not fully wired.

bernard what do u mean by not fully wired are there different hdmi cables? i just bought the hdmi cable yesterday plays video fine but no sound when plugged into tv

HDMI cable pins are normally all wired (Connected), unlike the stupid SCART cables which have disappeared. What I mean is that there may be a fault due to a wire not correctly connected inside the plug. So it's worth trying another cable. Then, if you still don't get any sound, you'll know it's something else.
If you don't have, or don't want to buy another cable, go back to the shop with your camera and the cable and try them both there.

This has probably nothing to do with your problem since you're using a TV monitor, but I just heard that Apple has issued an update of Lion (10.7.1) because of a problem causing loss of sound when playing videos via hdmi connection.
