hey sorry i am new to this
I have been into photography since i was 9 and i ve been doing it for a while on my fuji finepix s5200, now i decided to go for a new one i dont know which lens would be better, i do a lot of sport, people, landscape and macro(night shots on halloween) which would you recommend Nikon D90 w. 18-105mm f3.5-5.6G VR Lens or Nikon D90 Dx 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 VR lens?
Go with 18-105mm. I believe optically they're around the same level or 18-105 might even be better plus you will have all the extra range.
I don't recommend the D90 because it has one of the "old" sensors now. I would recommend the D3100 or D5100 or D7000 along with one of the "kit" lens it is sold with as a kit. Go to a camera store to look at those three or research them on-line and then come back with which of those best seems to suit your needs and budget. I have a D90, a D3100 and a D7000. The D90 is fine for slow moving subjects but it isn't good for sports because you need a sensor which can shoot clean high ISO's to allow you to freeze action. The D7000 and the D5100 have the same sensor and it is quite good at high clean ISO images. The D7000 is the best for your needs (some people consider it to be the replacement for the D90) but it may cost too much and the D5100 may work equally well for your needs. I have the 18-55 lens and it really is good, even for "macro" shots. I do not have the 18-105 lens so I cannot comment upon it.
Thanks alot iris chrome and donaldjose i am 90% going with the Nikon D90 w. 18-105mm f3.5-5.6G VR Lens and @donaldjose i would have loved the D7000 way out of my price range but this store i know is having a sale and D90 has a good price and as a beginner camera (I'm only 15) its perfect good price, "pro body" apparently, and what i have read it is better for photography then the D5100, I wont be using it for filming only on the rare occasion but thanks for your help.

I'd go with a D90 over the D5100 any day, I loved that camera, and if you don't care about video, it's the best bang for your bucks.
if you're a beginner, I'd take the cheapest kit option, and save some money to buy the 18-200VR lens. it is pretty darn good for an allround lens. it didn't leave my D90 in the first year of me owning it :)
I'm thinking of repurchasing that set just for vacation purposes.

The 18-105 is better in terms of zoom as everything else is identical (eg optical quality, bokeh, af speed) but if it were me I would buy body only and a 35mm f1.8 When I bought my D90 I went body only (and I still use it as my primary camera today even though I have newer and more pro bodies) and bought lenses that were a bit better... Also don't get the D5100 or D3100 as they aren't better than the D90 in terms of features. You will outgrow both of them if you are planning to be serious about photography.. Good luck :)

Umm for a low cost all rounder that isnt the 35mm? I personally would go for the 50mmf1.4 as well. Both that and the 35mm do well in low light and they train you in composition. A lens that would probably even be even better is the 60mm f2.8 micro as it is great for macro as well as portraits and night. That would probably be your best bet if you are willing to spend $400ish on a lens.
However if the locked focal length drives you crazy you would have to sacrifice a few f stops for your budget. the best nikon lens in that range probably is the 18-70mm. The benefit is that it is a bit sharper than the 18-105mm and it has a metal mount. The primes are still much better for people and night shots but arent as flexible for other things.
A off brand lens might be your solution too. I have a tamron 18-200mm and it is almost as good as the nikon 18-200mm (build quality is the problem).
Go to your local camera store and try them all and see which one you want before you buy...
Click on the NR Nikon buying guide. It will tell you the D90 has already been upgraded. Look at the dpreview.com review of the D90. Look at the dxomark.com ratings of the D90 (73) and the ratings of the D5100 (80) and the D7000 (80). Note especially that both the D5100 and the D7000 produce clean images at ISO 1167-83 while the D90 image is only clean up to ISO 977. The sensors in the D5100 and D7000 are clearly superior. I think Nikon is just selling out the existing stock of D90s at a discounted price because it is an old outdated model now, replaced by the D7000. By purchasing a D90 now you are buying an outdated sensor. It is 12 megapixels. The less expensive D3100 is 14 megapixels and the less expensive D5100 is 16 megapixels and the D7000 is 16 megapixels. Yes, the D90 is more "robust" in that it has some aluminum alloy in the body but who really needs such robustness anymore when in 4 years the digital internals will be outdated and you will want to replace them with a new camera. If you are a pro who shoots hundreds of shots everyday in all sorts of weather conditions a more robust metal body makes sense but if you are a normal amateur a Nikon plastic body should easily last you for 4 years. That said I recently purchased a reconditioned D90 body and have been using it these last few months. I don't think it is good for sports photography if you are trying to freeze movement under indoor lighting but if you are shooting outside in daylight it would be ok. Or you can try to capture those moments when action almost comes to a stop during an athletic event. Why would the D5100 not be good for a 15 year old starting in on photography? It has a full manual mode, aperture priority mode, shutter priority mode and program mode as well balanced fill flash. For the same price as a D90 you get a better sensor.
The 35 G is a good lens. I have one. It allows better low light photography. But it isn't a macro lens or a telephoto lens. You want to shoot sports and macro. So I would recommend the 18-55 "kit" lens which has good macro capability. I wouldn't go with the 18-105 unless you could get it for about $50 more than the 18-55.
go with the 18-105, and later on you can look at the excellent 35mm f1.8 and 50mm f1.8D
your D90 will have the built in focusing motor which will allow you to use non A-FS lenses, while the D5100 will limit you to A-FS only.
prices on the used 50mm 1.8d are beginning to drop with the advent of the new 50mm, fantastic for indoor withour flash, fantastic all around.
35mm f1.8, good walk around lens, used prices not too bad, same comment as the 50mm 1.8D.
you mentioned marco, Nikon 40mm, you have to get close, have not used it
Nikon 60mm, not as close, tried it, you should too
Nikon 85mm, for the same price I prefer the Tamron 90mm
or the Tokina 100 f2.8
Nikon 105mm expensive fantastic, but expensive.
after that you can begin to look at fixed or zoom telephoto, and you will get a lot of advice on that subject.
casperwb makes a good point on lenses. The D90's built in focusing motor allows you to use older AF lenses which do not have a motor in the lens. The optics are just as good but because they are "older" without the focusing motor in the lens you can get them used for a good price. So going with a D90 body would allow you to pick up less expensive used non AF-S (meaning Auto Focus Silent motor in the lens itself) lenses so you could add more lenses at lower cost. I recently purchased a ton of used non AF-S lenses from KEH.com, B&Hphotovideo.com and adorama.com You have to keep checking every week to see what has come in but you can get many lenses for the price of just one new one. That is a good advantage of the D90 body. But maybe you just want to start buying the most current lenses and this advantage won't matter.
