I have a Nokia phone and it takes some damn good photos. They are tops as far as cameras in the cell phone market.
It is true that you don't need an expensive camera to take photos that people will say "Wow"... Two or three years ago there was an exhibitions here in Israel from an art college, when the graduated students were asked to took photos/videos using their mobile phones, limited to 5MP, and it was incredible to see the great work students have done using their phones pushing the limits to the extreme and do work that you just can become jealous...
But when the light conditions are difficult, these tinny cameras will fail to produce the good results you can get with the appropriated gear.. :)

well said rbid
Also, changing lenses on DSLRs for those shots where you want to make the best use of the abilities of the camera.
CLS or multiple flash set up anyone.
Marco/Micro
DOF control
Ah, I could go on and on as to why photographers buy DSLRs, they may replace P&S but DSLRs?
Boo. not for this ghost
I'd love a dumb phone with a great camera with a micro SD card slot. I have no need for a smart phone- I don't pay for my phone bill so I have no right to complain.
And I think this is a nice place for Nikon to expand its market. Make a Coolpix phone!
That's a nice suggestion NSXType-R made... Must be a lot easier to add a basic phone to a proper camera than to add to camera to a phone...
You got your menu GUI there already. You have your scene mode for meeting/ outside/ loud presets. All cameras have a clock built in. Why isn't there one already?
@NSXType-R: Agree with you. For me, a phone is a phone and a camera is a camera...

Definitely agree that there is potential.

I don't know about you, but there's definitely times when I don't have a point and shoot (which is severely old in my case) or my DSLR. A decent low light performer would be sort of nice, in phone format.
Technology always runs forward, and the development of new/faster/better mobile phones are pushing all together forward. It will be nice to see a P&S with a friendly touch screen as in the latest smart phones.
I use a Panasonic P&S when I'm doing mountain biking (sometimes I take my old D70s), but I don't think I would take an expensive smart phone on that situations.
From other side, today, smart-phones can even do better photography than most of the point-and-shot cameras.. but again, I prefer to spend the additional money on better glass due that I do not use a lot my mobile phone, the region I live has poor reception and the monthly fees for using a smart phone with internet and other stuff is to high in my honest opinion... therefore I continue to use an old generation phone (Sony T700).
Now lets see these pics printed real BIG..
I've had a Nokia 5800 Xpress Music for about three years. Personally, I think the camera is total rubbish. If the light is good, I get a barely adequate snapshot, a decent record picture. But for anything else - forget it.
For example, I'm thinking of buying a pair of decorative lamps for my home. I've shortlisted a few and taken Nokia pics of them in the shops. To me, that's the only type of shot I've used the Nokia for in the past two years.
I have a Samsung who knows what the hell it is. It's probably 4 years plus old. It's an okay phone, but has no micro SD card slot.
That's my major issue. Other than that, it's been an okay phone.
I recently got a Samsung Galaxy S2, a fine phone with an 8 MP camera. It doesn't hold a candle to either the D300s or D700 if you look closely, but I've taken more snaps with it because it's so convenient and it's very quick to operate - and not as obvious.
"Mobile Phone Pics That Will Slap Your Expensive DSLR Silly"
Is that using a 5x7 print from a 110 film shot as the reference?
;-)
Shame on you Niko. Noisy, indistinct and color artifacts abound. Yup. My old D3000 could equal those results. LOL!!!
Of course you can take pics of interesting/nice subject matters with the cheapest cameras, but what is it worth? Who wants to buy a picture that looks nice in nothing more than a post card size (and that might be pushing it). I took what I thought was a great picture with my old 3MP kodak camera, but it looks horrible at anything bigger than a 5x7.
Cell phone cameras are nice to have just because they are small and can be used in a situation where you aren't carrying your real camera, but I think it will be a long time before they take dSLR comparable pictures.
I took this one with my phone on a hike Thursday because it looked like it was going to rain, but it made me sad to not have my Nikon with me.
I think that we are a little bit away from being able to equal or better entry level dSLR quality from the sensor and lens (spit - 1 element plastic protective cover), combos used on phones.
It will come, but it's not there now...
try this:
look into the lens of a cell phone camera.
look into the lens of a P&S
looks into the lens of the "cheapest" lens you own, like a 50mm Nikkor
now think, will a higher MP camera phone take pictures that are better or even the same as a DSLR.
If you think that they will, then we are wasting our time discussing D4, D400, D800 and all the lenses that we use for different situations and different types of photography.
The two will never become close to each other, even if you make 20MP cell phones. Don't believe me, look into the lens and think.
I rest my case.

Nice hiking shot you have there. It's a little tough to find views like that in NE Florida. As for the water aspect, there's a chance we might get our share later this week courtesy of "Irene".......batten down the hatches, but keep a camera handy.
