I'm a complete lighting newbie. (I don't do studio stuff.) I'm thinking about getting some sort of simple light setup, just a flash and probably a SaberStrip, something I can hand-hold.
The SB-700 seems like a good choice for the flash. It's wireless but it uses the on-camera flash, right? Will it still work inside of the SaberStrip or would I have to get something like a PocketWizard?
btw, I'm using a D7000 if that makes any difference.
I have never seen a SaberStrip before - neat little device.
From the design and that they refer to RF triggers, I would say no as the flashes need to see each other without a pocket wizard type of item.
being inside a box it is unlikely to trigger from the camera flash, so yes you will need a wizard.
Hand holding a remote light, without an assistant is tricky , so why not start with a cheap and cheerful, stand and umbrella
