I am looking to pick up either a D3100 or D5000 for my wife to learn on. I currently use a D7000 but also like the idea of having a smaller backup camera for times when i don't want to carry a heavier more expensive camera. The D3100 is $650, and the D5000 is $580. I like the little extra speed of the D5000 (4 vs 3 fps), don't really care about the rotating screen on the 5000. Will never use the video on either. If anyone has any advice or comparative thoughts between the two i would be very appreciative. Thank you in advance. Ed

When it has to be one of those, i'd say D3100 for its newer , better sensor.... or maybe have a look at the D5100, just a bit more $, and loads of better IQ.... ( the n.D5000 is noteven in the shops around here anymore......).

definatly consider the D5100, It has the same sensor as your D7000, just less buttons and dials

Is cost the deciding factor? The D3100 may have a slightly better sensor than the older D5000, not sure. You say you don't care about the rotating screen or video, but you also said this is for your wife. She may like the idea. Perhaps you should ask her.
If cost is not a deciding factor, you may want to consider the D5100. Then both of you would have the same resolution sensor in your cameras, and improved video, which you may come to realize, along with the rotating screen, that maybe they're handy from time to time.
