I want to bring my 70-200 lens to a Nikon repair shop to get the focus checked out. I'm pretty sure that it has a focus problem. I was wondering if there was a focus problem, how long would it taken for them to fix it?
I'm gonna be going to NY mid August and would like to use the lens there. I would be disappointed if I didn't have it with me.
Depends what is wrong with it and if it has to go to Nikon or just a Nikon Service shop. Could be a few hours, could be months. The shop should be able to tell you when you take it in. Make sure thought to tell them the exact date you need it back. (Give yourself a week or so.) Most shops are great but not always timely unless you make it really clear to them.
Have you tried adjusting the AF fine tune?
AF fine tune is available on the D300, D300s, D7000, D700, D3, D3s and D3x. If you have one of those cameras read your manual.
If you don't have one of those cameras, it isn't an option. AF fine tune allows you to correct minor AF miss alignments by changing up to front 20 + or - 20 back from where the camera thinks it should be focusing with the lens. This is not always effective, especially if you don't know how to focus properly or don't have the ability to do so.
As for my experience with Nikon lenses service. It can be slow, it took them a month to calibrate one of my lenses. It was worth it, as the lens focused more accurately afterwards.
Well the problem I have it not focusing on the AF spot with moving subject. If the subject is still or near still it focus spot on.
I had a D90 but I sold it to get the D7000. Since the lens focus spot on on still shots then AF tune probably wont help much, would it?
So you are only having trouble with moving subjects? Sounds like you need to improve your technique, rather than a problem with the lenses focusing ability.

If you are not familiar with the AF tune, I wouldn't touch it. There are so many variable that could be why you may not be hitting the shot that you can solve with Technique and setting the AF (do I dare say read the manual) to the optimal settings.

I know for sure its not my technique because I don't have this problem with my 24-70 lens. When shooting with my 70-200 vr1 I have the af on the subject but instead of the subject being clear the floor is clear. For example, when I have my AF locked on the dogs head the floor right below the head is freaken clear but the head is out of focus.
Does it sound like this when you auto-focus?

NO, not at all. The focus sounds normal acording to other videos on youtube. It just make a little tick noise when I have the VR on but without VR on then its super quite. I think the little tick noise is from the VR trying to conspensate.
