We all know this question is going to get asked over and over and over again in the up coming months. So let's just get a head start. Whoever answers this question correctly gets my admiration :^)

If you have to ask, maybe it should be the 3100? Just saying...

How much are they likely to cost. I have around £2,500. But really want the D800.

I dont think £2,500 will buy you a D4 and I dont think the D400 is going to outclass the D700, so assuming you don't need video, I would go for a D700 or save up for a D4
I have a D700 and am also waiting for the D800 but I suspect I will have a serious look at the D4

Now Niko, I thought you were joking when you said you were going to start this thread. I want to take bets on how many days after the D4 is announced, that people start asking "D4 or wait for D5"! Can I get in and start that one off early? :-)

    the real question should be:

would waiting for a better camera make me a better photographer?

have you maxed out the capabilities of your present camera.

The answer to those questions is the answer to the above.

    my answer: groan, painfully dumb

Should I buy a doughnut, muffin, kolache, or a cinnamon roll or wait for the D4/D400 to be released? Most of us will be 6 months before we can get our hands on either so I'm going doughnut, with a coffee please.

I find it odd that those who ask the "should I get the $2k DX pro camera or the $5k FX pro camera" probably can't afford either. (We know this since the following question will be; "Will my 18-55mm lens from my D40 work on the D4?" ;)

To be honest, I'm not remotely excited yet. 24mp doesn't add anything to my shooting and that file size is huge. (Don't anyone give me that, memory is cheap- external raid systems are 3 sb900s - cheap my A$$ - plus getting the damn thing to work. Even the cheap routes are $300) The only things that I will be waiting to see is the Low Iso and the dynamic range. Everything else will be better or the same as my D300 which is more than enough for me. If they change the batteries on the D400 I will be pissed - but I'm sure they will. I may just pick up someone's D3s or just wait.

***edit*** Can anyone tell I'm having major back-up issues this week? Plus I want to upgrade to Lightroom 2 as well. Frick'n catalogs, manuals written for uber nerds, fu fu fu fu fuuuuunnnnnn.

May I suggest the answer will depend upon need, desire and the importance of value to you. So the answer will be different for different people with different values. I would expect the D400 to be the value leader. Hopefully it will have a 24 mp sensor that yields cleaner high ISOs than the D7000 by one or two ISOs, f-stops or shutter speeds and also includes a bit more dynamic range. If it is the same sensor as in the D7000 inside a bit more robust "pro" body, it won't be worth the money to "upgrade." I am expecting the D400 to give me enough improvement that I will upgrade my D7000 for it. The D4 will be the new professional's camera of choice because I expect it to have all the D400 offers and a bit more in FX format. But that $5,000 cost is too much for many people who do not need the ruggedness a professional needs who shoots every day for a living. The D7000 will be fine for people who don't need high ISOs for shooting indoor sports, for example. No need to upgrade if you don't use the extras the D400 will offer and no need to spend the $800 more for a D400 over a D7000 if you really don't need the advantages it offers when you buy a camera. So the D7000 will still be the best choice among this group of cameras for some people. The D800 will be the best choice for those who are willing to wait half a year and feel they absolutely need or want the FX format. I would think the need for FX will be reduced if the DX is going to be 24 megapixels. Yet, we do have to wait two more months to see exactly what features the D4 and D400 will offer.

I really doubt that the D400 will have better iso performance than the D7000. Not only is the sensor going to have more MP but historically the D90 sensor was > than the D300 sensor.

So the main advantages of the D300/400 over the D90/7000 is not the sensor but the expandability, ruggedness, compatibility, cpu speed, FPS, handling etc...

I think "you" should buy a D4, even if we have no clues about the specs or cost.

The D90 came out well after the D300 and it was only nominally better. The D300s when released then matched the D90. The real comparison would be the D300 to the D80 which was eons better.

There are 100's of little Pro items in the D300 that sets it apart from the D7000 even though the D7000 is 4 years newer.

This decision is going to keep so many of you up at night isn't it? Can we add the following questions to this thread?

    Should I buy a D4 or keep my D3S?
    Should I buy a D400 or keep my D5100?
What lens should I buy for the D400?
    When is the D400 shipping?
When will Amazon get more D400s?
Amazon still hasn't shipped my D400!
What's the best lens for my D4?
What's the best camera bag for my D400?
My D4 has dust on the sensor. Should I return it?
HELP! My pics are blurry. Should I return my D400?
Unacceptable noise/hot pixels/banding on my D4 when I photograph the inside of my lens cap at ISO 409,600!!!

Absolute classic Super Shooter! I've not laughed so much in a long time, thank you. You do realise that ALL of these are going to be genuine posts. You did however forget one obvious one...............the "Why did Niko close down my 13th D4 discussion?" post. :-)

Even the dumbass forum spammers are now mocking our thread titles. "What Exercises Should I Do In The Morning?" WTF?!

Anyway, which one of these cameras is going to have the "best" video mode? Do you think the D4 video specs will be a "game changer"?

Best video - who cares (whoops, that's gonna open a can of worms). I'm old school (if you can be that in the digital age) and use my camera for still photography only.

TaoTeJared - you'd better get that upgrade to Lightroom 2 set up soon, as Lightroom 4 is just around the corner !!

The answer is simple if you follow Murphy's law of getting a new camera :)

You are just completely misunderstanding the given utilities of each format if you honestly think that the need disappears because of fat MP#. This is kind of like your "f4 is the new f2.8" gibberish.

    Hello everyone,

First time poster but I was wondering if the price of the D3s will go down once the D4 will be announced? I am saving up for the D3s and unless the specs on the D4 blow me away I will probably purchase the D3s instead.

Asking on this forum, "Should I buy a D4 or a D800" is like asking "should I buy a BMW or a Ferrari" to a bunch of car nuts, when a Corolla would be plenty to satisfy your needs.

Good cameras are like sport or luxurious cars, rare are the ones that "need" them but there are plenty on the road.

So, which one of us will get a D4 first? Bets are open. Cmon guys, forget about spec, D4 just sounds so much better than D3.

Maybe the real question is "what is more glamorous and smart looking, a D4 or a D800?" You don't want to overdoing it otherwise you may look flashy or stupid or underdoing it and run the risk of appearing as a looser.

Just look at me, I shoot with a D700 and more than $6K of lenses and never post at higher than 800 pixels ;> Perhaps I am the right kind of guy to be the first one to get a D4... mmmm... or a D800?

Now for the performance maniacs, the "what is best" answer may require lots of scrutiny, waiting-to-see and hard comparisons. The right conclusions may come only years after the release, well after the guinea pigs and the passionates had a shot at them.

Depends on the dealer you buy from but typically the high end cameras do not go down in price when a new model is announced. Supplies of the D3S will probably just dry up.

Well, my first DSLR was a D70s, then I moved to the D700 and recently the D7000 as a smaller body with video to partner with the D700.

My next two purchases will be the D7 and D70000. Anyone have guesses on the specs and delivery dates for those two? I gotta know....
