that is a great shot....

I don't quite get the confusion about whether or not the shot is real/staged/fake though?

Great shot but its not what it seems.. she is injured.

You guys really don't like reading. If you read the article it says it all. And how on earth would you stage that in the middle of a riot?!?
Not staged, not injured. They just started dating. Photographer didn't even know he had the shot until he got back that night.
Great Shot!

Not sure if she was injured, but the report says they had been pushed down by members of the VPD. Neat image regardless.

I'm not sure if it was on this site or in a UK paper, but a riot photo that I think equals this, is the one that has two opposing groups in frame, visibly showing their anger and hatred for the others in their faces, with a knife frozen by the shutter in mid air between them. Does anyone know the shot I mean? If not I'll try and see if I can find it again. Both are amazing glimpses in time.

great shot no matter if it was staged or not

Maybe YOU should read the whole article before critizing others for not reading it.
The girl who was knocked over landed head first on the pavement with her boyfriend landed partially on top of her. She was in visible pain, crying, but the 2 officers gave them a parting shove and moved on. By standers went to go make sure she was ok.

He was kissing her to calm her down while help arrived. The photographer DID know he had the shot. He just didn't think it was an important or good shot. His editor sent it out over the wire where it took off.

In the next few months this very scene will be played out on some cheesy cop show on TV.

I wonder if this would have become so popular if it had been shown as a video instead of a single photo taken out of context.

Super Shooter - good to see you read the article. I hope others do as well. Doesn't make any since to speculate when the whole story is there.
Take a Chill pill. I just didn't see a need repost what people can read for themselves. She was knocked down, shaken up but not injured. I left out the word "good" in "know he had the 'good' shot until he got back...oops. No one cares to read an onslaught aggression based on loose semantics at anyone. If you have issues with me you can PM me, otherwise leave it off the feeds.

As usual it's you who starts with the aggression.

While I don't necessary agree that it is taken out of context...Taken out of context in the sense that the one photo makes it appear as though this couple just dropped down to the ground and started getting it on in the middle of a riot.

Agreed this is a wonderful shot and possibly one of the best riot pictures I have ever seen. Fantastic work for sure.

SS. , I think the true story is actually more compellng.

I also wanted to add that I also did read the article that accompanied the image and thought the image was not staged. However, even if it was staged the imagary is so beautiful it wouldn't even matter. The photographer deserves a lot of recognition and an award for this piece. A fantastic display of love and violence. Its shocking even because of the contrasting emotions shown here.

I think that photo has been blown waay out of proportion to the actually riot. Seems as though it spread so fast because people liked the idea of two lovers releasing their passion for one another in the middle of such chaos. However that's not what happened.
It doesn't have the same kind of impact for me as Alfred Eisenstaedt's timeless "V-J in Time Square" photo.

In a few months no one will remember the "Riot Kiss".

Niko - thats an all time classic....not really a fair comparison.
Also WWII ending >>>>>> hockey riots

I disagree this image totally blew me away when I saw it and the WW2 picture is a classic for sure so difficult to compare.

Its a terrible comparison, so lets not compare them. And its not the idea that made people like it, its simply the photograph. Whatever went into the scene evolving has little to do with the overall impact the image has when you first see it. And no, Niko, it will be remembered every other time there is an excellent riot photograph taken in the future and then it will be unearthed again in order to make what will likely be a much more relevant comparison than the one you chose to make.
