Hi,
I'm deciding between canon and nikon and only thing that worries me is the video.
To be clear, I am professional photojournalist and I was shooting 10 years Canon (eos 3, 5d, 5dmkII) and 3 years Nikon (d2x,d3) so I know both very well. If I should choose just from photographic point of view Nikon beats Canon in terms of ergonomics, pro zoom lenses and AF. Even canon has better colours, white balance automatic and more prophotographers have canon lenses to borrow me.
So I'm waiting to buy D800, 16-35, 24-70, 70-200 VR (so far I was using gear from work).
Only thing that worries me is the quality of the video. I didn't need to use video a lot so far, but I see that there is growing need for it.
So far what I heard from camera guys is that canon has better video that Nikon due sensor type.
So my question is if there were any rumours or facts about video quality in coming d800.
Thanks in advance
Tomas
D800 video quality and video Nikon vs Canon generally

Nothing hard - you can do a forum search for D800 video there are some old threads on that.
Nikon has been behind on video mainly because Canon has been doing video for years with other systems. One thing I have noticed is that it seems that Canon and Nikon Both are putting the better tech in their Advanced amateur bodies rather than their Pro bodies. But then again there hasn't been any major updates in the last few years either.

But thanks anywayThat's because nobody knows what is going to happen with the D800. IMHO, Nikon is where it's at for both still photography and video quailty. The only thing the current Nikon bodies lack is video options(I.e. 1080p 60FPS). It's a known fact that Nikon has less noise, better Dynamic Range and better image quality.
I suspect the D800 will be a step on the right direction for video with the same options Canon is offering.

So far it is a big question mark. I have been waiting for 1 1/2 years (am shooting video with Canon) and I think that if Nikon wants to get in the video game they really need to bring something a lot more advanced than the 5DMkII, because the market is moving quite rapidly and affordable pro video cams will be within reach of dslr prices soon(ish). If Nikon wants part of that market then they need to think about RAW video, 120 fps, HDR features, and everythinig else that Canon dslrs don't have yet, including a vastly improved AF in video mode.

And when the D800 comes out , Canon would have upped the ante by then, so what do you do then, wait another 3 years?
Some of us want better video and some of us don't care much,
and then the D800, nah, go for the D4s that's what you need.

I have a strong feeling that Nikon is going to go for the kill in the next found of bodies. Expect the D400, D4 and D800/900 to have all the video options we want. Nikon's video already looks better than canon's anyway, the only thing lacking is more video options. This should be a thing of the past soon. Nikon will gain tremendous market share for video regardless of what Canon does, simply because they have better bodies, better glass, better AF, better DR and IQ. With appropriate video options, expect Nikon to take the lead.

given that people are willing to buy another brand camera (5dmkii) and lenses just to shoot video, I am really surprised Sony is not winning the Video DSLR race. the could put out a reasonably priced full frame with awesome video capabilities, without even coming up with anything they aren't already doing.
as for nikon winning the video race. does no one remember the "bad pixel" fiasco?

I'm with Gareth on this one. I thought the Sony NEX-VG10 (camcorder that takes DSLR lenses) hit the nail on the head. Look at all the rigging out there that people are adding to their DSLRs just to make the design more video camera like. If all you had to do was to buy a "second" body, I think that would be a huge +. Most I talk to say they have a second body for video anyway for weddings etc. Journalists and amateurs (and others) being the exceptions (sorry phosphoro).
To me, a different body (dslr mount) for video makes more since then dumping everything into one would help everyone out. You don't need a 24mp or even a 10mp sensor for HD video. Sure keep good video in DSLRs but the top notch etc in a second body.
I also think being "cutting edge" is a fools errand at this point. A year ago people were clambering for 30fps, then 60, now 120+. Video "standard package" is increasing about every 6 months, with every new release from every company. Release cycles have to be every year to stay current and with Nikon's release schedule being every 4 years (for pro bodies) there is no chance and really a need for photography to keep up with the updates in video. A second body focused on video could help keep companies current with updates and demands. Gap fills are good.

I was gaffer on a short shot with a high-end Sony and interchangeable lenses. Although it certainly has it's advantages it still couldn't stand up to the DSLRs when it comes to light sensitivity -and that at probably 4-5 times the price of a DSLR.
However, I have heard the new Sony FS-100 does away with light sensitivity issues and costs "only" USD 5,000 with 4x4x4 output. So you're right, that may be the way to go.Posted 1 year ago # -
I think the next round of advanced amateur Nikon and Canon DSLRs will be so good I'll invest in one as soon as i can make the purchase. Despite owning 8 video cameras I think DSLR Nikon will be our companies next camera buy. Will it be a D4? No for exactly the reason that TaoTeJared points out so well. Here we think the D7000 is pretty close but the next Nikon announcement (Its August 2011!) should bring great news?? That is course why I check Nikon Rumors close to the guessed at release date!

I'm a big Nikon fan and sold my Canon 5DmkII to be able to buy the D800 soon, but I must say that the video bit still has me worried. there was a video test posted on NR recently for pro video cameras that included the D7000, the 7D and the 5dmkII. and even though the D7000 held up pretty good with the Canons, neither were a match for "real" video cameras.
the thing that worried me most was the part where they zoomed in on the red dress with white dots, and where the Canons weren't really anything good at all in that part of the test, the D7000 was even worse trying to display that correctly.
I'm really keeping my fingers crossed for the D800 because even though I mainly take photos right now, I too am in the position that video is about to become more and more important in the things that I do.

(the red dress test is at 20m:00s into the video)The dress in the video is likely going to plague DSLR video for sometime in the light/distance/lens combo used in the video - that was the reason it was in the video.
It might get better over the fullness of time, but it isn't going away.
My best,
Mike
