i know both are different systems. but under good light would both perform well against each other or would the dslr way focus faster

While the X100 is a really cool little camera(that I would love to have), I think the D3100 would focus faster, depending on the AF-S lens used. Remember, the D3100 does not have an internal focus motor, so it can only auto-focus with AF-S lenses. The pro AF-S lenses focus much faster than the kit lens.

I own the X100 - D3100 would be faster. Only noticeable side by side though.
