When using a external microphone, what should the in-camera microphone setting be? The manual is a little unclear. Should the setting be set to off, or does the camera automatically over ride the in-camera microphone when an external microphone is used?

I believe you keep mic settings on "on" and the camera knows to shut off the internal mic.
But do a test video with the mic plugged in and mic set to off...if there is no sound then you know you need to keep this on.
Yes, I did that but how do I know if it is the internal or external mic the camera is recording? That is, without comparing audio track curves.
Keep the external mic far from the body and shoot a scene that causes the lens to refocus.
If the camera does not pick up the sound of the lens refocusing you know that the internal mic is turned off
but I'm 99% sure plugging in a mic disables the internal one

Plugging in the microphone will kill the onboard mic.
If you use a discreet short shotgun, and use a manual setting for focus, automatic sound is likely a pretty good setting in the menu. It's the 'ought'a getta 'em'.
If, OTOH, you use the auto focus on the lens, and 'don't' use a fairly decent shock mount, such as an, you can Google it, the vibration generated from the lens auto focus as well as handling the camera will be noisy.

I have purchased a Rode VideoMic and had a little time to experiment. So I have the that figured out - except I forget to turn on the mic about half the time - LOL.
I will say, the mic has a shock mount but it seems a little fragile.
I am going to Denver for four day to shoot video and stills for Jennifer's street painting, at the Denver Chalk Art Festival.
My game plan is:
1. Camera Movie settings>>manual>>yes.
2. Manual focus, obviously
3. I have a fluid head and I plan to rig one of my daughter's kids skateboard for a "make do" low dolly.
4. I have a second camera a D90, that I will shoot still and time lapse with.
5. I have a list of about 10 shots as "must gets."
I will see how I do.
The last time I posted a link to my amatuerish effort, I go called on the rug by forum management to never post one of Jennifer's videos here again, so I don't know how I will share...........

You are more then welcomed to post a video. Just don't post links or include links to her commercial website in your video. We've been over this many times but you insist on making it an issue. It's quite simple.
