I am considering purchasing a new wide angle zoom lens and I only purchase Nikon lenses. So which one would be considered the best by those of you who have used both?
I use a Nikon D300 and my wife uses a Nikon D60.

Well the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 is what I'd recommend(if you could ever find it in stock!). It's very well built and has great image quality, but since your choices are only Nikkors then I say the 12-24. I like that the lens barrel doesn't extend like on the 10-24. It's more "pro" like in it's construction.
Image wise it's a tough call. I'd say the 10-24 but only by a whisker. Go and try them out first hand and see which fits best for you Henry. They're both Nikon's so you can't go wrong.
But honestly check into the Tokina it's a very good lens. Just write Nikon on it if you get one :^P
I'll go for sigma 10-20, either the old one or the new one with fixed f, it's really one of the best lenses sigma ever made
I have the 12-24 nikkor... Nice solid lens. but its not 10mm. It depends on what you need the lens for. I would have gotten the sigma 10-20 if it was in stock. Its because at 10mm you can get the whole room in a single capture if you stand in the corner. I use that lens mainly for real estate photography. but its really nice and sharp so I have kept it in spite of that (less than 90 degree) limitation. it really is a solid lens. because it doesn't change size it doesn't suck dust into the lens/camera when focus or zooming. So its preety much sealed from the elements, I have heard of people dunking the lens and camera into the stream with no issues!
If 10-24 and 12-24 are your options I would definitely go for 12-24, much better build and you will expect that quality for the price.
As for third party I would seriously consider Tokina AT-X 124 PRO DX II, it has built in motor so it can be used on D60 and it is at least as good as Nikon and I really like manual/auto focus clutch. Your wife will probably have a bit of problems using it though, it is heavy.
I have the 12-24. Got it because I generally don't trust Sigma and couldn't find the Tokina. I like it's fixed aperture which as time has progressed, is really the only types of lenses I will buy now even though it may take me a year or longer to save up for them.
I would stay away from the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 because of QC issues alone - I went through two examples and never got a good one for my Nikkor
I can only speak for my Tokina 11-16, but its actually a very good lens. I've read that the QC issues have been resolved in the newer ones. The build quality is excellent, so as long as the one you get focuses well, its the best DX wide zoom available IMO (mostly because of its speed).
I am really happy with my tamron 10-24, Wich is quite a bargain, and can even be used on a FF body starting at 13mm. It's probably not as sparkling as the nikkor one, but it just works ©®™
is the tammy sharp?
sigma 10-20 f/3.5 is a little soft in the corners, but doesn't look worse than the $900 nikkor. . .
I've recently slapped most all of the wide angles onto my D300...
I had purchased the 10-24, but wasn't too happy with it. I returned it to my camera store and began evaluating options.
Nikon 10-24: decent all around, not the sharpest, good, but not $900 good
Nikon 12-24: pretty darned good, but weird distortion on the edges
Nikon 14-24: sharp, big, not too much distortion, $texas price
Tamron 10-24: soft
Sigma 10-20: just as sharp as the Nikon 10-24, I eventually purchased it.
Tokina 11-16: pretty sharp everywhere, though they are backordered...I had to borrow one from a friend to test it out.
I ended up buying a sigma 10-20 HSM and a tamron 28-75 with the credit returned from the 10-24.
I'm pretty happy with the decision, as the sigma isn't really any different than the nikon in terms of performance, and the tamron 28-75 is a damned sharp lens.
Just my $0.02

I'm very happy with the 10-24, the 12-24 just wasn't wide enough - the 10-24 is. The speed differential has not been an issue for me and I find the lens very sharp, but not as contrasty as the Zeiss ultra-wides on Contax G2 or even my old 20mm f4 AIS Nikkor. It is, however, a very nice handling, not too large, filter usable, ultra-wide-range zoom. I love it. I know the 14-24/2.8 on the D700 would be both wider, sharper and speedier, but that's a spendy combination that's much heavier - 54% (1080 grams vs 1995). Sometimes the pack-mule thing is overrated.
People you really should try Tokina AT-X 124 PRO DX II, newer version has motor so it is usable on every Nikon and for 500$ this one is very hard to bit, not as popular or fast as some but otherwise perfect, great build and IQ.
