Almost all of the super telephotos just showed up in stock at the nikon store and the 600mm was in and then out at B&H. I'm assuming this batch must have just left the port before or during the earthquake.

Yes super telephotos in stock anywhere is extremely rare unless pre-orders have been made by working pros. I heard the plant in Japan has been open a while running at partial capacity so its possible they were able to crank out a few copies maybe.

Well I am still on a waiting list but there is hope that I might one day see it.

Hey scoobysmak did you get on the waiting list without paying first or did you have to pay or put a percentage of the cost down first? Which lens are you currently waiting on? The only super telezoom I have ever shot is the 200-400mm VR lens and it is the finest Nikkor I have ever shot. I have rented it 8 times at the tune of $500 a day! I'd love to own one you get 85mm style bokeh in the entire focal range! Amazing...

I ordered a 400mm 2.8. I did not have to put a deposit down but as soon as it ships I get billed (needless to say they contact me after it ships so, one day my credit card will get an "ouch" and I won't know it until after the fact). At least I can plan on this but its kinda like walking on eggs using the card. Anything big I have to pay off instantly. Its probably a good thing to make me a bit more aware of my spending habbits but not exactly how I want to feel.

I wonder how long you will be waiting? That must be annoying to have to constantly monitor the card, I was in a similar situation last fall with a Leica purchase. Hopefully Japan starts cranking out these beauties again soon so you can receive your lens this summer.

Well I thought about ordering it from the Nikon store but after reviewing the options and reading the details it would be an extra $1500.00 on top of what I am paying already. Some of this was the difference in price, part of it was shipping, and the rest is sales tax. I am in a state that does have to pay sales tax from the Nikon store. If I need it that quick I am better of renting the lens for now. Even renting the lens only brings my total purchase to todays pricing, due to the fact I ordered it before the latest price increase on this item.

Scoobysmak did you try Ebay before making your purchase? I know a lot of people don't trust it but a lot of searches for 200-400mm, 300mm, 400mm and 600mm monsters turned up a lot of lenses from good reputable dealers.

Well I took a vacation for the weekend, I found out the hard way that it has been shipped. Fortunately, it was not at a bad moment but caught me off guard. Thanks for the help on the search but to find out today I should get it tomorrow is a little behind the power curve.

Wow so is on the way then you must be excited at least until the bill comes. Hopefully it will pay for itself right away. I've never heard anyone who was disappointed with pro nikon glass especially the super zooms. One day I will stop shelling out $6-7 grand a year on renting the 200-400mm VR lens and just grab one :)

I looked for other post and ran a search because my next moment of truth is way off topic, but all the other threads were over a year old and most of them closed.
Okay today was good and bad. I was like a kid in a candy store of course but after I opened the case I was like uh, wow I need to look at a ruler again, this thing is massive. Not exactly a bad but I thought I might be able to grab the lens barrel in some situations, uh no either get a forklift or hold the tripod mount (some of this was I didn't want to damage it but you get my point).
I have a gimble head waiting for me to pick it up at my local camera store but they were closed today so I have to wait until tomorrow. Well I wanted to test this today (I think anyone would do the same in this situation). I put on my trusty 70-200 fired at two different subjects out my bedroom window (at 200mm). Then I switch lenses and go for the gusto. Imagine this.....my boss has to drink his morning cup of coffee or he has the "shakes". Now don't let him have his morning cup of coffee and hand him a laser pointer to aim at a target 2000 yards away....this is about what how much motion I had in holding this hand held.
I am your average guy about 6ft around 200lbs. I am not a body builder but no wimp either. I am not sure if I could have focused on the broad side of a barn like this. I know it takes good technique and lots of practice but what a wake up call. I knew I would need the gimble head but figured I might be able to get one or two shots off before I lose my subject, at this moment that doesn't look like a good theory. Either way hopefully tomorrow I can pick up my gimble head and take way better test shots than I did today.
