Hi, I currently own a d700 with 50 1.4g and 16-35 f/4 g lens. Should I get the 24-70 or the 85 1.4g?? I am looking for a sharp lens with great color. I know that 85 is very fast and sharp, but it lacks the versatility of the zoom range of 24-70. I realize 24-70 is also a sharp lens, but.... Please help. I like to travel and get lots of shots. I already have a wide angle lens, so I'm stuck right now. Any suggestions?
Nikon 24-70 or 85 1.4g?

It really depends what you are going to shoot the most with it. These are two very different lenses. I would almost say a 24-120mm f/4 maybe something in the 70-300mm for more range.
For travel, I personally like the longer 70-300 VR as it is light and super sharp.
BTW all Nikkors are super sharp.

Please do a forum search as the 24-70 has been discussed extensively before. You can't compare it to the 85mm as they are used very differently. It just depends on what YOUR needs are. No one can recommend which of the two you should buy because only YOU know how YOU shoot.

dyckim - not a easy choice as You have the wide angle, standard already covered. IMHO, 24-70 beats both 50/1.4 and 16-35 in both sharpness and contrast (maybe I have a great copy of 24-70). for travel photography 50/1.4 is perfect on FF, and there's not that much difference between 50 and 70mm. I would go for something longer, but that's just my preference. maybe N105vr micro or N70-200/2.8.
Anyway, as Niko wrote, search the forum for more info about 24-70.Posted 2 years ago # -

And its super fast and it creates much nicer bokeh. You already have the entire range covered with all your other lenses, and to be honest your 50mm will shoot better and faster than the 24-70 will at that focal range.

Ha ha ha, were supposed to be helping with the decision and all were doing is muddying the water :-)
For what it's worth I regularly use a 700 with both the lenses you are thinking about. The one important question you don't answer is if you're looking to carry only one lens on your travels? Then I would definately suggest the 24-70 as I often find 85 is just too close. Also where are you going to be traveling? The 24-70 would be much more versatile if you're going to want to shoot inside little churches and museums, the 85 possibly if you're going to be trekking the great outdoors. Remember also the 24-70 is quite a large heavy beast to carry all day (especially with the lens hood in place) so if you are thinking of having your other lenses with you all day as well, I'd go for the 85. I hope this helps a little bit? I know you'll be delighted with whichever one you buy, they're both great.Posted 2 years ago # -
You have a prime...do you like it? They are totally different uses and have no overlapping range...so it is impossible for us to know which one is going to work better for you. I have heard people love the 24-70 and some that don't like it that much. The primes are always sharp, but after have a couple I dislike them compared to zooms. If you feel a need for the range at 85...like Skintbrit said, it seems too long and not long enough.
I would suggest maybe a micro lens, just because it has dual uses.

mmm Thinking sideways.. I'd add a 105 vr macro, since you lack close-up in your setup and the 105 Vr is also very sharp and very versatile... ( confusing more now.. ?)
