Kind of irrelevant but IMHO they should make the wide mm different, maybe like 50 or 58mm since if not, people unaware of the existence of the other lens who would say 'my 55-300mm lens' without specifying the aperture would need to be asked for clarification. (The DX 4.5-5.6 or the FX 2.8-4?) Of course if they didn't know the other model existed there's a higher likelyhood that they'd be in the lower-end of the DX camp...
This would be nice but I'm not so sure about the variable aperture, sounds cheapo to me.
Now if it was a constant f/4 or f/2.8 that'd be great and I'd love to pair it up with my 17-55.
But if this lens gets made won't it be an updated version of the 50-300mm f/4.5 ED
Depending on the price I would maybe actually get this lens...we will see. I am wondering how long everything is going to take to come out now after all the disruption over there. If the variable aperture keeps the cost down some it really fits a need IMO. At 50 F2.8 and then at 300 it is still F4. I am sure not 300 F4 prime performance, but might be a great zoom option.
