I seem to be losing sharpness when I export my raw files from Lightroom as JPGs. I have read various 'musts' and 'must nots', but I'm still not happy so I thought hey - you guys are doing it all the time to post on the PAD thread so would you share your export dialogue box setings with me please?
JPEG export dialogue box settings for Lightroom(6 posts) (4 voices)
At the risk of teaching my grandmother to suck eggs
Can only suggest you take a very careful look at all the tick boxes in the export dialog box
File settings, check: Quality , Limit file size to ,
Image Sizing, check: Resolution
and obviously, check: Output sharpening
are you reducing file or image size ?
Also try: Edit> Presets> Restore Export Presets
Seven's got good advice. I normally have the output sharpening set to low or normal for screen. Probably a stupid question, but are you comparing raw files at 100% zoom and jpg files at 100% zoom without having resized?
Thanks for your replies. Seven, I'm sure you don't have to worry about that!
I sharpen in my workflow for screen so I never use the sharpen in export function. I did a search and had already reset my export presets which changed nothing when I checked it. I guess what I am saying effectively is that I can't be making the right decisions about the image size and quality when I export. my raw files are sharp as heck but when I export for club comps or Flickr etc. it goes bad. It seemed to start when I installed HDR Efex Pro (which really had me paranoid for a while!) but that must be a red herring.
So what would be helpful would be if you guys shared your export dialogue box settings with me - what you do to keep your quality up and your file size reasonable? I have read (here?) that saving jpegs as 100% quality just increases the file size - any truth in that? Seems improbable to me.
The one thing I don't like about LR is sharpening on Export. How do you know what the result is, try-look, try-again-look? IMHO it's something that needs to change in future versions.
