Hey, all

So i'm going out to a bar tonight to watch Hockey (Boston-Montreal game 7) and i'm planning to take my D7000, 2.8 zoom plus SB600.

in the winter months i could easily fit everything in the pockets of a bulky winter jacket, but now i'm trying to dress up and realize i have little that looks reasonable that fits what i need. (damn these warm temps...)

The reason i bringing the heavy gear is that i have some friends who are leaving the city soon, as well as the fact that win or lose, tens of thousands of Montrealers will be running(if not rioting) through the streets tonight.

So my question is really for future reference, how do you guys fit your stuff when a photo-vest is a no-no and bags a nuisance?

Shoulder bag, or a messenger bag. I use the photo messenger bag from Tenba. It will fit a body( with no grip) a flash, 80-200 mm, 11-16mm and two more primes.

in the end i just wore heavy cargo pants, and put caps on the body and the lens, fits quite well and with an open shirt does not look out of place.

helps that the pockets are massive enough to fit a 70-200, if not discretely.

Hi,

I've never found anything that didn't make me stick out, but then I always carried everything. :-)

If anyone figures anything out, please share, but I'll still probably want to carry that extra couple of lenses.

For me I usually use a small messenger bag I always bring with me. It's quite unobtrusive, so I usually bring with me all the time. It has the benefit of not looking anything like a camera bag, principally because it is not- there's no padding and everything can knock each other. I haven't found that to be a problem, as long as I don't accidentally drop the bag (which I might if I forgot that I stuffed $3000 of stuff in there).

When I don't carry a bag with me, I just stuff my lenses in by jacket pocket. My camera I keep under my jacket, or in another pocket if it's small enough.

Obviously, for any of these strategies to work, you really need to pare down your system- when I go like this, I never bring more than 1 body+3 lenses; 1 body+2 lenses is more common, and I avoid bringing any lighting gear, support gear or even filters.

While it sounds comfy, someone might think I'm a Steeler's fan - not that there's anything _wrong_ with that, just saying...

@jerl, my Safrotto bag is the best I've had so far. It's in another thread, and it's a Domke look alike. Unfortunately, I carry a tripod, but the bag can carry two flashes and three lenses easily.

All the bags I have gone through...

I now use Domke bags (F-5XC, Ruggedware, & F3 Backpack) a Marmott belt bag and a Incase sling pack. All of them are discrete and don't look like Camera bags, ballooning mom purses or an Italian man bag. Sometimes if I'm just shooting a couple of short primes I just use a Tamrac or Lowpro lens belt pouch and use my Blackrapid strap under a coat or shirt jacket.

how about a Spider Holster
This has the advantage you have no straps on your shoulder
The holster and camera can be hidden under a light jacket
don't forget to practice using the lock

Fishing shirts and jackets are what I use. They have pockets for most of our gear and they are also waterproof. Hope this helps!

Is that a lens in your pocket or are you happy to see me?

I know you said bags are out but I have this case logic sling that is very lo-profile (wont be hitting people with it in a crowded bar) and for $45-50 is cheap alternative

Cut the dorky case logic tag off and its a pretty good looking bag....IMO

i would say a Red spandex figure hugging suit, that way everyone will be drawn by the camera or maybe not :)

seriously though, i find a over the shoulder bag best dont like belts even though they make you feel like batman with a utility belt.

something like this?

I'll second the messenger bag. I've got two, a large casual canvas type (traditional 'messenger bag'), plus a smaller, dressier briefcase/messenger Eddie Bauer made of leather... better for more formal occasions. I just load what I need into one of these smaller bags and leave the main bag in the car (which I can usually go back to in a pinch).

Mostly tho, if I don't need a lot of gear I much prefer to ditch a bag completely and load the essentials into a vest... better weight distribution, more flexibility in shooting (bending over and so forth) and much easier to navigate crowds. But as you say, there are times a photo vest makes you feel conspicuous, so on those occasions I use a longish (mid-thigh) tan safari jacket... the two larger pockets will hold a couple of lenses or a lens and flash, while smaller items will fit OK in the breast pockets. A safari jacket isn't exactly formal, but like the trench coat and the bomber jacket, they are classic all-occasion garments that don't draw too much attention.

@gelu88 - Being discrete and using a flash is an oxymoron honestly. One thing I have been doing with my Film cameras, in bars with friends is playing with either a Kleenex diffused key-chain led light or a key-chain Maglight. It is going to take a bit but there I am seeing some potential there.

Most of the time I just give up and be "that guy" and continue wishing I had a Leica M9.

Another option is to have a Jansport backpack and stick a small photo bag inside.

If you're relatively young looking, you'll just pass for another college/high school student. If you're not, you'll just look like you're carrying a crappy backpack- until you pull out your gear though.

Any backpack will do, but my Rezo AW 160 fits in it and (most) of my gear fits in it- a D40 with a 35mm 1.8 and 18-135 with a Giotto's Rocket blower. That's a different issue with my 105mm macro, I need a bigger bag.

So you also get superior rain protection if you use it too.

Right on about the flash, pretty useless overall. lots of great pics at 6400 ISO though.
