D7000 Importing Issue?

After years of being away from SLRs, I recently got a D7000. Just a few days later I took it on a short family vacation and shot a bunch of photos, all on auto (I've got a lot to re-learn, so I figured better safe than sorry). I just tried to import them, and every one has black lines either horizontally, or vertically (depending, of course, on the photo orientation). It looks in effect as if I am watching letterbox TV. The problem arises with both Nikon Transfer and iPhoto. Any thoughts on what I am doing wrong? Or maybe what I did wrong when I shot the photos?

I don't have the D7000, but is it possible that you had selected a different aspect ratio?

What do the images look like when you just simply copy them over via an SD reader onto your PC?

search the site for D7000 errors - there are many threads with sensor issues. You may just have a bad sensor.

If you display the photos on the camera, you can zoom-in (by pressing the lower left button next to the back screen), and then use the arrows to move the window across the photo. Can you see the black lines you saw on you TV/Computer Display? .. If yes, you may have a sensor problem.

Thanks for the thoughts. So far I've only had a chance to try the zoom in check, which is somewhat comforting in that the edges of the images all look fine when viewed that way. I don't have a card reader, so I can't try moving the photos directly, but will get my hands on one and will look at that. I also will try to post a few images online later so folks can see exactly what I see.

As best I can tell, the only way to change the aspect ration of a photo (as opposed to video) is to use the in-camera crop feature after taking it. I've not done that, so I remain puzzled. (If there is a setting I am missing, please let me know where to look for it and I'll see if I screwed it up.) As I mentioned earlier, I greatly appreciate the thoughts and will try to post a sample later.

I do not think the photos are damaged or cropped (but good to learn that you can crop your photos with the camera!), I guess it is a display issue on your TV/computer.

Check page 239 of your D7000 users manual.

It deals with "Auto Image Rotation" and the changes will show up in ViewNX2 and Capture NX2.

Check your settings and see if this feature is set to ON.
If it is try changing to OFF and see if this will solve your problem.

Please advise outcome.

No luck -- the setting was on, but all turning it off did was cause the new vertical test image to show up as horizontal when I tried to import it.

Good news update -- for some reason, the black lines only appear in the thumbnails when the camera is hooked up to upload. Once the photos actually import, the lines vanish. I have no idea why, but am pleased as can be at the quality of the photos. Now to really learn how to use the camera to its max.

Thank you all for the advice. I look forward to being part of this community as I work from newbie to (I hope) reasonably competent!

I'm pleased you seem to be OK now and that your pictures are fine, but wanted to come back to you on something you said in the above reply. The in camera crop function (at least on my FX bodies) alters the dimensions of the picture "as it's taken" and not afterwards. I don't have a 7000 so can't speak for it, but there should be a PRE capture "aspect ratio" crop option in the menus, AND the option to crop the image amongst other things POST capture in the image editing menu (where you can sort red eye/convert RAW to Jpeg etc). Just thought it worth checking the aspect ratio selection if you still experience problems. Good luck, welcome to the forum!
