Do I go wider or longer? buying D90 + 1 lens

Hi all,

I am in sydney Australia and I have a budget of $1500, can possibly stretch to $1700 at a pinch.

I'm looking to purchase the D90 + 1 lens to complement my Nikkor AF 28-105 f3.5-4.5 D lens (from my F70 days)

Types of shots I am particularly keen on are landscape, cat portraits, macro and soon our baby (due July).

I'm thinking of adding to the wider end of the kit with the tokina 11-16mm, though still figuring out the conversions with length etc, my brain is a little slow.

To date my digital conversion was a Panasonic TZ1 and now a canon G11 and the ocassional play with my husbands 40D with 17-55 f2.8.

I was *almost* tempted to get the tamron 90 + tokina 11-16 with canon mount, but after popping my Nikkor 28-105 on dad's D90 I'm swaying back (very quickly) to my home ground ;)

anyway, Just after suggestions or opinions for if I"m on the right track with getting back into serious (dedicated not necessarily good) amateur photography?

only other option I can think of would be a 70-200 ish range however my budget probably doesn't allow for that AND a d90 body..?

Welcome to the forum. Well for the shots you suggest that you take you will need at least 2 lenses. You 28-105 isn't wide enough for landscapes really. For portraits you 28-105 is OK, but a fast prime is probably a better option like the 35 f1.8 or one of the 50 mm primes. If you are trying to stay in that budget. Kind of hard to recommend stuff...people shoot such different stuff in different ways. Another option is to get a wide angle lens, use your current lens and also get a SB600 or one of the other flashes for inside pics. You could get the Tokina 11-16 Nikon mount, and one of the Nikon primes + flash...probably be nearer the $1700 mark though.

I don't know about the lens you already have, but I have a feeling it could be upgraded as well. Sorry I don't have much of a direction, but just some thoughts. Anyway good luck. Not really a good time to buy Nikon stuff since all the lenses have gone up recently.

hi there I am from Sydney as well! I would say get neither! That old lens of yours is a good one. Just get your D90 (or a D7000 that will make your dad jealous! ) and play with that for a while. You will soon find out if you are missing the wide or the tele end or something else. Once you get your camera you will be snapping away and learning all things digital! Pre processing nef processing .. budget for PC hardware and good screen etc etc..

Hmm just re read your post.. your husband has a canon!! time for a divorce! .. seriously though .. I think you should be looking at getting a canon too if he has lots of good glass already. either that or he can switch to nikon! or the divorce is still an option! :-)

Unless you often find your self enlarging a small part of the image at 105 mm

I would go wide, have a look at the sigma 10-20

Good for landscape and will take in the whole room for family shots

If don't have one already I would also add a dedicated Nikon flash

I would agree broadly with what has been said and would add that the 11-16 Tok is great but as your current lens starts at 28, you may find youself without cover of that 16-28 region which could be a problem with landscapes as a main interest.

One solution would be get a lightly used D5000 (really cheap now the D5100 has been announced and then use the money saved to get a lens that would cover that gap. The D5000 image quality is equal to the D90.

Just an idea.....

She wouldn't be able to use the old lens then, but for the cost difference could get the 18-200, a prime and possibly a flash and be set.

I use the Tokina 12-24mm which is a stop slower but more range and passed on the 11-16 Tok for that reason. If you added a 35mm 1.8 G and a 50mm 1.8 AFD you would be very happy I think. To be honest you could go for the Kit 18-55vr and the 35mm, 50mm and save even more.

A faster prime for your kid, animal and family is much preferable and would be a good investment.

A lot of folks on this forum recommend wide aperture primes, but you don't need a wide aperture for landscape photography, (at least not if your name was Edward Weston or Ansel Adams), nor do need a wide aperture if you are happy to use flash.

Wide apature lenes do have a vital place in creative photography, but you will discover that for your self, if and when you need them

As ever, it all depends on what you what to do and have much money you want to spend
