Anyone interested?
If it's cheap enough, I might be. Looks like just a rebodied 50mm 1.4, all of the exterior seems the same, same odd filter thread too.

I am, for use on a D7000. I was just watching a 1.4 on auction trying to figure out if I really wanted to spend that much on a 50. This is attractive enough to stop me from bidding.
and then I clicked refresh....
I wouldn't mind a new prime to replace my old AI 35mm ...
If it is optically better wide open than the 50mm f1.8D I'd be game for the G.
I just bought a 24-70 2.8 so I think my 50 1.8D and 35 1.8G will not be seeing much use anymore. I like my 50 1.8D, but I might consider this new 50 if:
1. It turns out I actually need a 1.8 lens
2. It's sharp at 1.8
3. It focuses faster than the 50 D (or at least faster than the 35 G)
4. It's relatively cheap. ($250 or less)
af-s
I am happy with the 1.8D on the D7000
It will probally be a good buy for the D3100 and 5100 owners, who do not have the in body focus motor.
speed of focus is not much of an issue with me on a 50mm lens, as the objects I photograph with this lens tend not to move around much.
If it was cheap enough and noticeably sharper than the old one without any distortion, I'd probably get one.
Everybody seems to want this lens to be cheap in price. If it really came out I would take into consideration what's going on in the current lens market as a reality check. That said, since I do enjoy the AF-S 35mm f/1.8G, if I got the 50mm I'd migrate toward the f/1.4 for the increased DOF.
Well, it's hard to believe that this lens would be that expensive- after all, the price of the 50/1.4 sets a limit on how much the f/1.8 version can cost, and a 50/1.8 should be easier to manufacture than the 35/1.8. Of course we'll when it gets here, but it's hard to believe that this will be a expensive lens.
mmm I'll wait for the 50mm 1.2 AF-S ... ( cost alot prob. but it will suck the light in so hard that the room turns dark.. :-) )
Well, you know that 50mm f1.4G that I mentioned at the beginning of the thread. It went for $565 (used). I was watching that one because it was the best deal.
But also:
I don't think we'll be seeing the 50mm 1.8G actually being available until production returns more to the norm.
Could be nice...I don't really think I need any more primes though :(

Why? If it is made in China or Thailand like other consumer lenses, I doubt there would be any production problems at all.
+1 The pro body plant is the one that received major damage in Japan.
I saw it was a 7 blade design which will probably equal hexagon bokeh. I'm willing to bet this will run close to $250-300 as it is an FX lens.
I'm happy with my 50 1.4G and will stay with that. Good to see there are more prime updates though!
I wonder if it will have more distortion like the 50mm 1.4G lens did? The current 1.8mm is simply amazing and for $120 cannot be beat. I wonder what price range the new 50 will fall into? Maybe $225?

That is the real kicker, bokeh on the 50mm F1.8D is terrible if there is any light in the out of focus area. I think I might just save up for the 50mm F1.4G.
I want a 50mm 1.4G too. But the point I was trying to make is that the 50mm 1.4G is out of stock just about everywhere. The few stores that have them, they want $700 - $800 for them. That's why I was thinking that a new 1.8G wouldn't be available anytime soon.

Some of the glass might be made in those Japanese plants perhaps?
Might be the glass but we know Nikon was in a big hurry to switch production of it's metal mounts to Malaysia. So maybe a key component of the lens was being made in Japan while the lens itself was assembled in China or Thailand. That would explain a delay.

Rounded blades, though.
7-Rounded can be favorably compared to 9-Straight (which is what the 85 1.4D had).
I'm very anxious to see the bokeh as compared to the 50 f/1.4. In theory 9 rounded blades are overkill (and likely a marketing move) if 7 are properly implemented. It will be interesting to see the shape of the bokeh. That said shape isn't all there is to creating good bokeh. The 35 1.8 is a perfect example of this. Very round shape to the bokeh due to its 7-rounded (never a hexagon) but horrible ring-effect at times.
Doesn't the 35mm F1.8G use 7 rounded blades? It has nasty bokeh wide open. Edit: just noticed that you already mentioned that.

That's insane! Is that really true? Which dealers are selling them for that?

I had a long chat with my Nikon dealer a couple days ago. According to him, Nikon sources its glass from Hoya Japan. And, the problem with many of Nikon's products, even ones made outside of Japan, is that they may require certain parts that are only currently manufactured in Japan.
This is an interesting topic, aside from the lens itself. Obviously some web developer made a mistake and posted something from a dev server to a production server in error. The question we should be asking is what else is Nikon working on. They don't usually release one new lens at a time, so what others could be part of this release? A new 80-400? A new 300 f4?
Or maybe (cue the conspiracy music) Nikon throws something out there and watches forums like this to gauge the reaction of their market.
