    Dear All,

Sorry if this has been posted before. I have searched with no luck and tried to PM Adamz but it says my mailbox is full when it was my first PM ever.

Have any of you with the slight lense movement when fitted to the camera check the lens bayonet mount?

I have similar issue recently (was fine with d90) and been using d700 in the last 3 months and only recently i noticed the movement. I have a good looked at it and to my surprise, it seems there is part of the bayonet/mount that kind of broken? Sorry, not sure how can I say it. I have post the picture to help explain what I mean.

Can some one tell me if this is normal or if I need to contact the shop for a repair or better get a replacement if this is manufacturing flawed?

    Thanks in advance,

Yeah that doesn't look right at all. I have VR I and it basically looks the same set-up and I don't have that separation or doesn't look like, by design, it could happen.

To everyone - make sure to look at his picture. This is not the same issues others have been saying about this lens with the D7000.

Someone else had posted about play between the lens and the camera, I forgot the thread title and the member who posted about it.

I'm not sure what happened to that member's camera.

Do you get an error message about the lens not being attached?

Yeah I have read that post in the past, but for some reason couldn't find it last nite after a long search. His post was concerning about the slight movement while atttached to d300/d700, while I have something more worrying in that my bayonet mount maybe damage. Please refer to my picture link. Fyi, the lens still functioning like brand new and taking gorgeous pictures (I haven't post any in my flickr account) so no error message to date.

    Thanks TaoTeJared, appreciate your input.

Anyone else have 70-200 2.8 and able to compare mine to theirs? I just want to establish if mine is okay or broken. Every picture of the lens that I have seen, doesnt show or expose the section I am concerning about, hence I need other owners's input.

    Regards,

Hi JY I just took a look at my VR2 and there is a few thousands of an inch gap. I'm not really concerned about it because it's bacially a light baffle made from plastic. the only concern i would have is it was vignetting into my image area. the rear bayonette mount itself is mame from metal and has to have some very slight play or it would not mount freely onto a body. Back to the rear light baffle, basically it's cosmetic and is used to keep dirt out and to cover the inside of the lens from view. all plastic will flex slightly which is whats causing the gap in both our lenses that you referred to. I was a camera tech for over 15 years and have dealt with this before, i hope this helps you.

Mine look just like yours. My N70-200 2.8 VRII and N24-70 2.8 both do not baillonette as tight on my D700 as the 105 mm or TC-20E III. I can twist them a bit to the point where I used to sometime loose the AF. It hasn't done this for a long time. Perhaps the contacts were too new and may had a slight films of oxidation or something that needed to be broken.

    SteveM & Pierre,

Thank you for the input. Having another look at mine, I think what SteveM said is make sense to me. In fact, the part i was referring to in my picture never touch any part of the camera body when attached. I was just a bit concern that the part was kinda loose, but if I understand you correctly it is meant to be working that way i.e. to keep dirt out and to cover the inside of the lens from view. It is made from plastic while the bayonet mount is made from metal.

Thanks again all, it has been much appreciated.

    Regards,
    JY

Mine looks just like yours as well. Looks like a type of tape or piece of plastic they apply around the inside at the top that is fuzzy on the exposed side. Would be just to keep light from reflecting I would guess.

I mentioned this in the other thread (wherever that is), that my "new" Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 VR I (refurbished, but looks brand new), also jiggles when mounted, by perhaps, about a millimeter or two. Shoots tack-sharp, but still, a bit worrying that there's so much play. Same amount of play on both my DX and FX bodies. But I never lose electrical contact, so it seems "okay."

My 70-200 vr2 has the same "loose" piece that you seem to have. I was a bit worried when i first got it, but i haven't had any problems whatsoever due to that piece of plastic.
as far as the movement, mine does that as well but i've never lost any electrical contact either.

As for the movement, mine wiggles slightly on the D700, perhaps fractions of a mm, but it is there. On the D7000 it is very tight, no wiggle whatsoever. No issues with IQ on either camera and no problems with the electrical contacts either.
