On 20 Mar I had ordered a D3s and 70-200 thru the military exchange system, these orders are shipped directly from Nikon USA. I called them end of last week for a status update. They contacted Nikon USA and called me back yesterday and told me that Nikon USA had informed them that they were closed for shipping till after the 6th and that my items would be shipped after that date. Didn't get a reason for them being closed. Could be inventory time?? Whatever the reason hopefully anybody else out there waiting wont have to wait much longer.

Were you aware of the earthquake, Tsunami and nuke leaks in Japan? Where do you think this model of camera comes from?
If you were too late to get stock on hand, you may have to wait several months....

I heard Nikon USA is doing their inventory now. Can't remember the source--it might've actually been my NIkon dealer who told me. I think he told me this yesterday.

I've noticed that several major retailers, including B&H, are out of the 70-200. Originally they said it would be back in stock in 7-14 days; now they're saying they have no idea when they'll have it again. I think this thread, as well as the threads related to price hikes, show that the events of March will have an impact on camera price/availability for some time to come, perhaps through the end of the summer.
Looking at a map of Japan, one can see that Sendai lies on the outer edge of the evacuation zone mandated by the Japanese government, which the U.S. government had deemed too conservative. Were I an engineer working for Nikon, I wouldn't be in a big rush to get back to Sendai. On top of that, I'm sure that the earthquake messed with the calibration settings of some equipment that relies on absolute precision.
I'd say shoot with what you've got and be happy with it for the time being, or rent if an extreme need arises.Posted 2 years ago # -
Last year I broke down and ordered a D3s, two 70-200's, a 14-24, and a Sigma 150-500 through the AAFES special order system. I am sure glad I did. If I had waited until now no telling how long it would take.
I pretty much grew up on Okinawa and air bases in the Tokyo area back in the late 50's and 60's. We went over when I was in 5th grade and came back when I was a senior in high school. I have a lot of respect and affection for the Japanese people. My heart goes out to them.

Probably just trying to get a handle on what they have. There are quite a few Japan based companies who have or are doing this now to get a handle on the supply side.

AAFES (the Army PX) doesn't stock this camera and lense in their warehouse. It is shipped directly from the supplier (Nikon USA). I was merely trying to pass on that we have been told directly by Nikon USA that they had been closed and would resume shipping on the 6th. I assumed it was inventory time because I checked Nikon Rumors articles from this time last year and lo and behold they were closed for 10 days till Mar 31 2010 for "inventory". Just wanted to pass it on for the other folks that may be waiting.
WOW, Bjrichus I would have never know if you hadn't of just said that. Just for the record. The first Nikon I ever bought was a Nikkormat and I bought in Yokohama, Japan in 1970, yes i know where they are built. Oh, one other thing they are built in Japan but the distribution center for the USA is located in the USA.

With all the crap going on in Japan, it seemed to me like you were asking for some kind of miracle and knowing where the FX gear comes from, it appeared like you asking about delays was in poor taste.
Sorry again.

@Wanderer69 - I thought it was a reasonable and well directed question. Just because an earthquake happens in Japan doesn't mean that everything stops everywhere else. Lenses are not built each time an order is placed.
There is Nikon inventory at it's distribution center in the US and all over the world. I also was talking to one of the camera guys at the local shop and Nikon is offering the ability to help them with stock on hand by making it available to other stores/customers. Local shop loves it since they don't move much. He sent them (sold back at a small profit) some 17-55 2.8s, 18-135mm, 18-55vr, 55-200mm, back. He was happy to offload some inventory glut they had.

Found out an interesting bit of info this morning. I talked with AAFES reference the status of my order, she stated that it was still scheduled to ship. Then she mentioned that they had been informed by Nikon USA that some items such as the 70-200 would not be available until "after 1 Jun 2011".
