do you guys think there's room in the market for a compact/lightweight dslr that's also full of features. i understand there are pros and cons for both sides. i just wanted to see what your opinions of this idea are.

Do you mean a mirrorless evil like camera? Or do you mean a professional version of the D3100? I don't understand what you're asking?

The D3100 fits the bill quite well.

yeah i meant a full feauted d3100 sized dslr. should have elaborated on what i said

What do you mean by "full featured"? I'm not sure what features are missing and how anything would be different than moving on up the line to a 5100, D90, D7000, etc.?

Weight is a funny thing - the lighter the better when you are carrying a camera, but when you're using it, it needs weight to dampen out vibrations and slow shake down. The D5000 was almost too light for me, the D90 with the grip seems about right. The higher end the camera, the heavier it gets but that is caused by the built in extra robustness required in a heavy duty camera. Most of the 'features' left out of (for example) the D5000 are for marketing purposes(placement in the range) and wouldn't have added much weight.

When shooting my 70-200 or 105vr I add my battery grip to my D300 to counter the weight. It actually feels lighter due to the balance.

Nikon D40 FTW!

@studio460: Yes, that is a light camera. I got the D40 for my daughter few years ago, with its plastic "kit" lenses (AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-55mm)... compared to the camera I had (D70s), the D40 was very light.

I vote for either a D3100 with a subcommand dial, 100% viewfinder, and no crapdial or a digital F2

what does "FTW" mean?

I don't know that one either.

They should have continued the D50 line.
An entry level DSLR with a lens motor.

I think if the D50 were still to be produced it would still be priced like a D90 especially if you factor in inflation. The size difference between the two I think are negligible.

I'm still lost on the original poster's question.
I do like the D50 idea. The lack of a focus drive and the metering on non-G lenses in the consumer line is a big negative for me not to buy a smaller travel body.

i should have elaborated on my post before posting LOL( now i know). what i wanted to say was i just wanted your opinions on what if the camera manufacturers made a small, light weight camera(d3100 sized or a little bigger) that has many on camera features, such as features on the higher end models. i understand some like the robustness of bigger cameras due to balance and handling issues, but the opposite can be said as some might prefer the compactness of the smaller cameras. its just a thought....

I guess I'm wondering what you believe is missing on the smaller bodies?
There is a ton of specialized things on the D300 on up but I can't tell you what they are since I have not shot anything less than that in 3 years. :)
AF motor, Memory banks, timed interval shots (i don't know what it is called), 51 AF points, meter through the lens, I just don't know what is or is not on smaller bodies.
