Was using my D300s with Flash Card Kodak 600X. I checked each photo as I went then turned the camera off. On turning on again all the photo's just taken had disappeared and were unretrievable. Checked everything I could think of. The card was holding 200 photo's taken earlier. I had to reformat card to get back to normal. Do you think I have a faulty camera or card?

Almost never the camera. Sometimes you can actually see the photos on your computer using a external reader.
Fyi - Sandisk usually comes with a retrieval program when a card fails.

As a rule I would suggest that unless you only have the 1 memory card (not a good idea), not to format it until you have tried one of the many picture recovery programs available. Sometimes these are very effective at restoring some or all of the lost data (even after formatting). Could it be that you turned the camera off while it was still reading the card? I would be surprised if this would cause TOTAL data loss though. I have had a few photos lost on one of my cards (fortunately after backing them up to an external HD), but never every one. Had you formatted the card in the camera, before you started using it that time?
Sorry to hear about your problem.

@SkintBrit is right. The cost of memory chips dropped, therefore, it is wise to have more than one chip. If there is a problem, use the second card.
I would also add a card reader to the shopping list. I do not connect the camera to the computer via USB due to the following story: A close friend of mine that is also a photographer, during a dry cold day, on his home that had a plastic carpet, accumulated static electricity and when he connected the USB plug to his Computer, a spark jumped between him and the computer/USB cable, that burned the USB driver of his camera. No he can't download photos directly from the camera nor use the computer for controlling the camera. Since then, the first thing I do, is to use a card reader.. maximum I will burn it or burn the memory chip, but not the camera.

I always stick with Sandisk or Lexar Pro cards. I have had almost every brand fail but those two.

guys please don't turn this topic into which card is better as we already have couple topics like that
nancy - if the shots are valuable for You, get the sandisk recovery software (imho, it's the best on the market - in photo recovery), even if You formatted the drive You should be able to recover most of them. also, in future try to get second card as it's a better strategy to go with more smaller cards than with one bigger

Erm - doesn't the D300s have twin slots (CF and SDHC)?
