Camera Industry finalizing a 5 star rating for camera phone quality

Very interesting idea, given the uselessness of megapixels and the difficulty of understanding the various factors that make a technically "good" camera, i'm curious to see how well this rating system works.

It's designed for cameraphones and compact cameras, so i would imagine that anything above a pro compact will score a 5/5.

"The test combines a host of technical measurements--detail, sharpness, chromatic aberration, lens distortion, and more--then links that analysis with subjective human assessments to ensure the measurements really are relevant. A detailed formula boils the various factors down into a single rating.

Good idea. It's better than nothing what everyone has now. Scoring is all subjective and still will be manipulated by spin doctors but for the non-photo junkie, I'm guessing it is a welcome addition.

The problem will all "star" system is that the quality always increases with time - 5 star today = 1 star tomorrow.

Depends on how they categorize it. If 5/5 rating is what a D3000 or mirrorless camera can produce, i doubt anyone will complain. Remember that this is primarily a cameraphone rating system.

Totally worthless ranking system. Do you really think a manufacturer would slap a 1 star label on their camera? Or would anything other then the most expensive model get 5 stars?

Oh, they will use 1 stars. But (as you kinda mention) it will tell the consumer nothing other than the price of the phone. Cheap phones will get a "1 star camera". Midrange phones will get a "3 star camera", etc.

Intel has been using this Star rating for a while now, it could work...

With phones, people get really ticked off if they don't get what the manufacturer said they would get. If a company says a camera is 5 star and it isn't, they will get creamed in the blogosphere and that has a real affect on phone sales. Cell phones are very transient in nature. Very few have life expectancies on store shelves of more than 6-9 months. If they get a bad rap coming out of the gate there isn't time for that to fade before the whole model is replaced.

Good point, but i am assuming that since this is run by the "International Imaging Industry Association" and not one company, they will have a objective system, also in their example device they showed got 2.5 stars, which bodes well. I would assume a "1 star" cameraphone would be a 1.3Mp camera you find on a cheap flip phone, and i COULD imagine a manufacturer submitting such a phone for testing but who's saying they'd advertise the results? ;)

In addition they say they will certify DxO Labs or Imatest to do the testing, so while no holy grail, i am willing to assume some limited objective value to the score.

Obviously we'll see what happens when it actually comes out, if the iphone 4 gets anything over a 3.5, i'll be dissapointed.

we lost a star today, she got voted 8 stars,

however to comment on the phone stars, I think things other that the camera will sell the phone.

Smart phones are the go now, and I think those features will sell the phone, the camera is secondary.

hopefully I am wrong.
