Alphanikonrex : Your picture could give me hours of entertainment to stare at, I love it! It reminds me of Aloe, ick thats sticky, but good for sunburns. :)

Nikodoby : He gets punched often, I really wish I could say i'm just messin' around, but, i'm not. :)

Here's a picture of my kitty, Connor got him for me for my birthday! I took this awhile back, his names Rabilolli, Rave, LD (little devil, he's very bad), or Felix, as you can see no one in my house could decide on a name, haha. I would like this better if his tail was in it. I got my camera for my brithday, so this was only a few days after, I'm still in the learning process. Gosh, I feel like i'm writing a book to you guys.

alphanikonrex - nice water reflexions, can You share how You made this photo, I've tried to capture water like this and never suceeded

chloe - You are a very cute girl, lucky connor :), as for Your cat picture, try to get on the same ground as Your subject, in this case just knee, as You were most likely shooting standing, also check framing, as sometimes it's better to crop after than to cut some parts of the picture, apart from that really good timing

mb - nice BW picture, very interesting landscape, especially with this man sitting in the middle, what's the location?

niko - as I already wrote, I love Your tiger shoot, bengali tiger probably as it looks kind a big, the only con I have is the oversaturation - too many yellows and greens, BTW this would look great converted to B&W

Acorn Woodpecker Melanerpes formicivorus

The melanerpes woodpeckers are found only in the new world. This species lives in small noisy groups (most woodpeckers are solitary or travel in pairs). The live in mixed Oak and Pine woodlands. This habitat is important because, as their name suggest, they store acorns for the winter. Oak trees provide acorns but are too hard to drill holes in. They drill holes into the pines and pound an acorn into each. They are the only creatures who can dislodge them once their in. Many trees are often riddled with holes. If you look closely at this pine, you can see small holes in various places along it.

@adamz: When I first decided to make the photo I had no idea what I was in for! Anyway, I knew someone was bound to ask eventually, so I took a photo of my setup:

The key is to have lots and lots of light!

I used a Sigma 18-50mm (more or less the same specs as the Nikon versions) as it was my lens with the highest reproduction ratio.

I set the lens to manual focus and brought the camera in as close as possible.

I knew I would need a high shutter speed, so I set the camera to 1/320 sec, the max flash sync speed. Then I adjusted the ISO to 1600, which was the highest I could go without having a very noisy image. Finally, I set the lens's aperture to ƒ/13.

After that, I pretty much shot blindly. I would check where to drop the water so the droplet was in focus, but when I actually took the pictures I had to move my head as it was blocking valuable light. Then I would start squeezing the dropper while holding down the shutter button. After about ten shots I would let go and check my results on the camera LCD. And then try again (usually after leaving the room for a moment to cool down as the lights were producing a lot of heat).

Bottom line: all you need is patience, endurance, and plenty of light!

I have found the 35mm f/1.8 to be an excellent lens. At $199, it's an excellent buy. I paid $209 for mine from Ritz, but that included shipping.

There are scalpers on e-bay asking $400 and I have seen it for as much as $600 elsewhere. It happened with the 18-200 VR when it first became available and difficult to find. If a lens is priced over suggested retail, I simply won't line the pockets of the scalpers, I'll wait till I can find it at a reasonable price. Of course that's just me.
I imagine, someone correct me if I'm wrong, if you bought from a scalper, i.e. not a Nikon distributor, the warranty would be worthless.

heartyfisher - I really like the snow movement, and also the unusual use of darker frame - really intriguing

tai - nice bug, isn't it a little bit overexposed, app 2/3stops?

as we have Europen, American, Australian squirrels, we need only African and Asian ones to finish the world tour :), above is the missing Asian one - taken in Delhi, India

@RobertD: Nice colors, is this close to what Velvia looks like (I've never seen a shot done on Velvia)?

@adamz: I love images with a shallow depth of field, that's a great one!

I like your composition and cropping.

It's pretty close to Velvia from what I can gather. The only way would be to do a head-to-head comparison with the same photo. I'm not quite sure I like that much saturation, but it's different. The original shot is more subdued.
The shot was taken over the windshield of a Honda Goldwing motorcycle at 55mph. A lot of my photos were taken that way. I no longer have the bike...sold it last year. Sorry to see it go, but it was time...40 years is a long time to tempt fate.

and been sufering from gout the last week. Praying for a good job.

@ Adam : Sorry thats not an aussie squirrel. It was taken in NYC. Yeah
it was jumping about just about to jump off the tree.
The shading? LOL I couldnt decide on the crop. I thought both crops
were good, so I shaded the outer crop ! LOL. Hearty Copyright!

The velvia PP is close. but maybe a touch over saturated? on some colours?
Dunno. Velvia is special.. You have just got to tryit yourself.. I have
looked at some curves that is supposed to simulate Velvia but its just
did not work well for me (It was close but not to my taste). I guess maybe
I needed the same starting point as the originator of the curve profile.
I am still looking out for a way to get the velvia look in Digital.
Oh well ..

When you hit upon that Velvia magic formula...let me know. I'll keep trying on this end. I agree the Gore Pass is a little over saturated. I can crank that down a little. It's fun playing.

Hey hearty, sorry to hear. Chin up my friend, everyone's struggling lately it's just some of us got it worst then others. *Niko is raising his hand* Have faith pal. Don't let "them" get to you! At least you don't owe $24million dollars in loans (at least I hope you don't):) I know it's a cliche, but there's always someone who's got it worst.
