Does anyone know if the bit rate of video files stays the same if you turn the sound recording off? I'm asking this, because it could mean we would get more information dedicated to footage, meaning more quality. And since it is better to use an external recorder for sound there would be no problem in doing this.

Considering sound is a very small percentage of the overall bitrate (open a file in VLC or your viewer of choice and see) EVEN IF Nikon upped the video bitrate by a matching amount you won't see any perceptible difference.

The audio component of the bitstream will be very small in proportion to its video component.
